A friend (damn his extra money!) just got the E80. To ensure he got the right machine, I immediately went to his house, grabbed the remote and spent some quality time dubbing a tape of mine to DVD-R.
Anyway, one thing I found HIGHLY annoying with the E80 was screen navigation. There seemed to be no simple way to jump back to parent screens, they were all kind of modal. Either you used the screen presented (ie, entered info and hit enter), or you cancelled and got dumped out of the menus completely.
This was a PITA, primarily because the screen I last entered before dumping back to no menus was always 2-3 screens below the main menu, and each one required me to re-set my settings for that menu before proceeding.
Furthermore, there seemed to be no way to "cancel" and go back to the main menu screen in some sub-menu (without getting dumped out of menus completely).
I'm not sure if it was just my unfamiliarity with the user interface and what I was trying to accomplish, or if the UI was just really hostile. I will say it definitely made me appreciate the UI of Tivo -- menu navigation is simple, intuitive, and you can hit the Tivo button at any point to go to the main menu.
Anyway, the machine worked great, and I was able to rescue my wedding video from VHS onto a DVD-R which plays just great on my Apex 3-disc DVD player. I even remembered finalizing.
Now if he'd just agree to bring the E80 to my house for a week or two of extended testing he could be sure he bought the right thing...
