I want to confirm that is OK to pause the HDD during editing e.g 3-6 hours and not OK to pause a DVD due to laser overuse. Am I right?

Pausing during the recording of DVD shouldn't really create any excess laser wear since writing to DVD is not continuous. During a pause, the buffer is holding the information to be written and the laser will simply await the next write cycle once the buffer is full.

Although I haven't tested it, a long pause during playback will probably trigger a built-in auto stop after a certain amount of time.
