I'm glad I got my ordered a few weeks ago

Got 'er hooked up over the weekend and did my first real recordings last night. My 3575 is still sitting there, a little sad however

What is this? Amazon now wants $550 for a new 515H. This is worse than gasoline.

Don't blame Amazon. Considering those high prices for 515's are by others that offer their goods through Amazon, that is not exactly Amazon that is the actual seller.

I know this has probably been asked before but what is the main differences between the 515 and 513 other than the size of the HDD? Are the remotes much different?

Hardware wise, 515 has a longer battery backup time, bigger hard drive, and that is about it. Latest software firmware from the 515 can be applied to the 513 to make it function exactly like a 515. Remotes are different but very similar:

MDR513 remote.....................................MDR515 remote:

Thanks for the info on the 513/515. The only thing I can't make out on the picture is does the 513 have the rapid play with sound like the 515 and does it work the same?

Yes. Look at Johnla's link of the comparisons and remote diagrams. Rapid play works the same.

I went with the 513 since I couldn't find any 515's. I'm planning the FW update and use a Harmony remote. The only difference would be the HDD size. And my OCD won't let me accumulate too much on it at once anyway

I just got my main workhorse (3576, in heavy use since 2008) down to just 7 titles on the HDD. Boy was that liberating.

Forum giving me fits today, very slow. Not sure if others are having trouble too -- just wanted to offer a heads up that there's a refurbished 515 on ebay. Price is reasonable now, in the $150 range, but there still are 6 days to go. No idea who is offering it, but the seller has a good reputation /rating.

Got my 515 today that i orderd last friday from J&R, very fast shipping. My question, does this machine have a program guide that displays different channels and the programs, current and future? I thought it would be set up like a direct tv dvr, you bring up the guide and highlight the program you want recorded. I only have OTA from an antenna on the roof going to a toshiba 51h84 rpct. Have the signal coming from the 515 to a Samsung DTB H260F to my tv because the tv doesn't have an atsc tuner. So, an i missing something, or do you have to program the 515 like an old vcr?

Just a quick post to thank wajo and everyone for this outstanding thread!

I have been heavily using a Pioneer DVR-533H for years. I was very active here at AVS Forum in the "Pioneer disappearing EPG" thread starting in 2005 when I bought the thing and encountered some EPG problems. Over a couple months we documented lots of quirks there, and the machine has more or less survived until now. A couple times over the years it corrupted itself and I had to reset it, and a couple years ago I had to beat on the cable company (and various local broadcasters) to continue the EPG service. But the EPG continued to rot, and there was a start time bug in the Pioneer, and so lately I've been recording everything with manual timers anyway.

A couple months ago the timer control screens got corrupted and no amount of reset would fix it. I literally can't see the schedule, much less edit them or create new timers. So since then I've been running on just recording via the existing timers, which is fine since I mostly just record big blocks of time and then edit down to the segments I want (long story). Well, today I found that one of the shows had moved out of the timer blocks, and now I'm really stuck. Looks like the end of the road for the Pioneer after 7 good years.

I came here, learned about the HDD/DVDR situation, and now have a 513 on order! Refurbed from eComElectronics via Amazon. I'll give the firmware update a shot when I get it. I've looked at the manual and it seems to be fine for my needs.

Thanks for helping me solve this problem within hours of it popping up for me!

No EPG. Timer recording is described here. Note also further down the Pre-Titling you can do so your recorded shows all have a title.

It's nice that the 515H has the quality you received from the HD tuner. I have several H260F tuners in a box that I used to feed my analog recorders before getting digital tuner devices like the 2160A & 515H.

We may have been our own worst enemy on this price jump. All the inventory checks made it look like a super duper hot item, so the inventory managers jacked the price on us.

Oh well, I'll be happy with my 2 I guess.

Walmart is selling this new for $250. I have a $50 gift card and was thinking that the 3 year warranty for $30 was a good idea. In your opinion do you think $230 ($250 minus $50 gift card plus $30 3/yr warranty) is a better deal than the factory refurbished $170 90/day warranty from J&R?

Just kind of looking for knowledgeable opinions. Have a 2 yr old refurb Magnavox vcr/dvd recorder from J&R and it's on the fritz. . am wondering if I should spend the extra $60 and buy new w/the longer warranty? Thx for any advice.

Nah, I see the price increases as a sign that there won't be any more new inventory replenishment. See the sun? It's about to drop below the horizon.

*sigh*

Come the first of the month, I was actually going to get another 513 to stow away, "just to make sure".

Oh well...

You'd think this alone would be reason enough for Funai to reconsider not making any more.

As for JonC, he could still get one from Wal-Mart, which I believe was his intention.

Hmmm....

Why the different remote?

If you prefer the remote from the 515, you can get one of those to use with the 513.

At least 10 or 15 (maybe more) of them will be offer on ebay in the next weeks/months, for something like $350 - 450. Funai must be very proud.

If funai was smart, they would be the ones selling them on ebay for $350-450.

On a different note, ever wonder why there are so many of the previous model 513's sitting around in inventory waiting to be sold? They probably had a huge production run that they didn't clear out before they released the 515.
