Full of questions this week, I guess.

Uh... What's the difference between these? Aside from the price? (Seems even the seller is the same.)

If you zoom the pictures you can see that the part# is the same.
I've seen this before with Amazon where they have 2 listings of the same product from the same supplier with two different prices. Annoying as hell.

The bitterness of poor quality lasts long after the sweetness of the low price is forgotten . . . life is too short to drink bad wine

Other recordings off HD channels look fine, not like this at all, and I've used the same set up to record the same films off another channel and it didn't look like this at all.

Is this what all viewers of AMC HD would have seen during the broadcast, even getting the feed directly from their cable boxes to their TVs?
I'm not really sure why it happened to you. Maybe your cable box is changing something for output over HDMI?

I checked a couple of recordings on my PC from AMC HD channel on FiOS and the frame rate is 29.970 on those. My PC tuners capture the stream "as is" so that's what FiOS is sending down the pipe.
Spoiler!

+1

I'm getting pretty much the same thing on my AMC HD recordings on Charter captured with a Ceton InfiniTV: MPEG2, 1920x1080, average bitrate around 16Mbps, 29.970 fps, no interlacing artifacts whatsoever. I have no cable boxes to compare.

I've often noticed that AMC exhibits more pixelation and poorer audio quality than other HD channels. While watching an action movie on AMC the image breaks up frequently and the sound appears to be focused primarily on the front speakers. Watching the same movie on Syfy looks much better, USA better yet and IFC looking almost as good as the BD... all this on the same equipment.

I have another new one on order from mouser.com and have also on order caps to fit two old bricks to see if they can be resurrected with a bit of soldering and epoxy. The old caps in them are junk brands with labeled ratings in excess of the capacities possible from their can sizes in any reputable brand of caps.
The $5+ replacement from monoprice.com has ceased to make the converter functional (blinking red light, green screen from video out), even though using a voltmeter it shows 5V, so it's probably just as well monoprice no longer stocks it. The converter it died on is again functional, using an original that I recapped.
