My existing system is a little long in the tooth and the receiver is flaky with powering off, loosing signal lock, etc etc.

I appreciate everyone's time in helping us pick a new system. For starters:

Budget: $500
Existing Receiver
Existing 5.1 Speakers
Room: 18'x17' with vaulted ceilings
Want to stay with a 5.1 system.

I am looking hard at the Polk RM6750 system or the Athena WS-15 speakers. I'm not in a hurry to upgrade the sub and in fact it's not half bad. The receiver does need to be changed for reasons I talked about above. I like the form factor of the mountable speakers, however not sure if I will hear an improvement over the speakers I have.

Thanks all !

Since you have a working set of speakers, personally I would put the majority of that budget into replacing the receiver and worry about replacing the speakers down the road. What kind of features are you looking for in a receiver?

I don't think the Polk 6750 speakers will be that much different than your exisiting JBL's. Like the previous response said, spend your money on the receiver.

I have very simple needs, right now the receiver just functions as a 5.1 system with no video interface or switching. I guess it would be nice, however but I have zero experience with that.

Currently I feed the TV via HDMI direct from the HDDVR and then run optical to the receiver. I also have a DVD player that runs component directly to the TV and coax to the receiver. Throw a analog Wii in the mix and that about does it.

If I were to upgrade the speakers I could set them on shelves I guess but wouldn't know where to start with a decent set of bookshelf speakers.

Thanks!
