Can 7.1 be overkill for a 15' x 10' room? What would be the best $1000 HTIB set-up? - AVS Forum

Looking to build a Front Projection Theater Room in 15' long 10' wide Loft, and need a good surround set-up for $1000 (Or less) that is future proof as of now. I don't know if a 5.1 or 7.1 set-up is the way to go.

Any Help would hopefully bring you tons of good karma.

My room size is similar to yours and I just ordered my HTIB. My choices were between the Onkyo HT-S7300 and the Denon DHT-591BA. Both really close to $600 on Amazon. The Onkyo is 7.1 and the Denon is 5.1.

From what I read, to get the benefit from the 7.1 you need to be able to place the rear speakers BEHIND your listening area. This means if your seating area is against the wall (like mine) you won't be able to take full advantage of the 7.1 setup. That on top of multiple reports of the Onkyo running hot led me to the Denon. I have a feeling the Boston Acoustics speakers will sound a little better than Onkyo's as well, but I have no proof of that.

That's the best I can do to help you . Good luck with which ever way you decide to go. I'd go to Google shopping, Best Buy's website, and Amazon.com and read the reviews for anything you're interested in. Don't forget to search these forums too!

I believe you can also have the extra 2 speakers up high above the fronts as well. Someone please correct me if I am wrong though.

For a $1,000 budget, the best solution is NOT an HTIB. Others may chime in with specific suggestions, but for $1K you can get a very nice set of speakers and a receiver...and it will be better than any HTIB.

scotty562, Thanks!

Now if I'm a few feet in front of the rear speakers, would that be good enough to use 7.1?

The Dennon is nice, but I question the future proof quality of a HTIB system for only $600. Unless there is no $1000 HTIB that is not marginally better.

Hmmm, I just figured it would be a more simple approach. I guess you are right. Getting things piece by piece is far more complicated and frustrating... I wouldn't know where to look.

Thanks for the help guys, but I decided to pull the trigger on a separate receiver/speakers.

I got the Pioneer 1120-k Receiver - I hope that was a wise decision.

Now I need a good speaker set.

Not all that many movies have 7.1. Less than 200.

http://www.blu-raystats.com/
Do search under blu-ray statistics, for Audio 7.1.

But I have a 7.1 and every now and then, like in 3:10 to Yuma, in the night gun fight, listening to the ricochets, it sure is fun.

Yes 7.1 or even 9.1 Marantz, Yamaha have better sound quality than Denon

Or you could go with this

Thank you for the Karma

Was the $1K for receiver and speakers or just speakers?

If this is for receiver and speakers you probably have about $500 left?

Check out the KEF C1 speaker package.

If you look at the individual price of the speakers you'd pay over $1K seperately.

KEF C4 sub $359

KEF C6LCR $249

KEF C1 $219pr

Thanks everyone, and Yes... I was figuring $1k for everything, but now it looks like I am willing to pay a little more to get a far better system than a HTIB set.

Getting many great recommendations from you guys has made this even harder. Now, should I go with the Pioneer speakers, and buy a separate Bic SUB, or should I go with that KEF C1 set?

Well what did you decide? I purchased the KEF c1 system and after some tweaking, I really like it.
