I'm in the market to buy a 5.1 home theater but a newbie.

Part of me wants to buy a lower budget htib ~300 or so...I'm thinking about the Onkyo S3400.

The other part of me wants to splurge a little more...up to $1000 or so. The higher end onkyo s9300 is in that range.

I'm an HT newbie, and wanted to see if anyone had opinions on these systems or alternatives in that $300 range or $1000 range.

If someone also has suggestions on putting together your own system for a $1000 bucks, I'm all ears.

Thanks for your help / suggestions.

Start in the middle with something like the Denon DHT-591ba

In the audio you get what you pay for so if you can spend more it's recommended you do. For budget under $600 get a home theater in a box

For 1000 you can piece together a better system that the onkyo 9300

I know crazyrob is a big proponent of the jamo 5.1 speaker set and I must admit, I heard it recently and was very impressed (only for a couple minutes, but...). The 5.1 speaker set is often on sale for about 400 dollars. That would leave you 600 for a decent receiver and a sub.
Alternatively, get a good reciever and get you L-C-R speakers, then add surround and sub in the next purchase...I would guess that the reciever is the one item that will "date" most quickly.

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

BTW, just as side...I recently purchased a HTiB and I went low end for a specific reason...I wanted to learn what it is I wanted by having a unit and seeing what I liked and didn't like. I bought the SLS Q line gold system. In the couple of months I have had it, I have learned that the speakers are great, the sub is okay and I will likely be looking for a AV receiver with HDMi inputs sometime in the next year. I am looking to move in the next year or two and after I see what theater room potential my new house has, I will consider a couple tower speakers as my front L and R.

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

Look at KEF

Stretch the budget a little more, for the Denon 591 receiver.

Guys thanks for the information, really helpful.

The Denon htib you suggested looks good but there are no new packages available on amazon, only used. Do you have any other suggestions on good htibs?

In terms of pairing for around a $1000 do you have a suggestion on receiver, speakers and sub I can buy that will give me great sound / video upscaling?

Thanks for your help!

what about something like this?

Speaker + Receiver
http://www.amazon.com/S426HCS3-Speak...5210903&sr=1-6

Sub
http://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F1...210903&sr=1-10

Is this compatible together and are the speakers, receiver, and sub all good?

the only thing is the speakers are ugly looking.

any other suggestions on putting together a set / and or a budget htib would be appreciated!

I'd rather see you with a Jamo s606 hcs3 5.0 speaker set (http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...ures/544012176)... Denon avr-591(http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-591-.../dp/B003H04Q8C)

And Bic f12(http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin/shop/...BT46359P.shtml)

I still haven't figured out why the Jamo X06 sets are selling so cheap...

Is Klipsch really killing the brand? (which would be a huge disappointment)

If you really care about up-scaling...

Onkyo TX NR609. Yes, it "blows your budget"....but...it is the cheapest receiver with decent upscaling. By the way, what are you upscaling? (VCR/Wii...)

Klipsch is pricing Jamo low cause nobody in the USA has heard of Jamo so they can't charge the prices that Jamo goes for in Europe where Jamo is known for good audio.

Don't over spend the guys budget on a receiver when good sound quality comes from the speakers not the receiver. When the Onkyo 609 comes with Audyssey MultiEQ then recommend it but until then its far behind the Budget Denon's in terms of audio quality

Denon AVR-591 will surpass the needs of this guy in a budget

What are the video devices that your going to hook-up through the receiver?

Most DVD players sold already do the upconverting themselves. Blu-ray players upconvert DVDs when played through there

If you have a VCR or Wii then you need upconversion otherwise its a waste of money

+1 crazyrob425 ... upscale is pointless unless you watch videotapes or play the wii.
Also, if you have a PS3 lossless audio can be achieved with lower end receivers.

+1 on jamo 606

I have a jamo S 413 speaker set and I love the sound. Wish I would have got the jamo606 package, however.

Good points, I didn't know this. I use a ps3 to watch dvds so i guess i dont need upconversion? I'll be hooking up a ps3 and my cable box to the receiver...

I really want to get the Jamo S606 based on what you guys said with the Denon Receiver and Bic SUB.

My wife hates the wood paneling on the Jamo S606 though. The ones that are all black are like 300 dollars more.

Are there any alternatives to the Jamo s606 that are as good in the same price range? Something more stylistic to meet my wife's 'look' expectations....she thinks the wood looks cheesy and dated..

Tell the wife she can have $300 to spend herself or your paying the extra $300 for the black to make her happy

No you don't need upconversion with the PS3 as it upconverts the DVDs and as long as you have an HD cable box, you are golden and don't need upconversion

No, the Jamo s606 is on sale for $350 (best deal won't last forever) http://www.amazon.com/Jamo-S606HCS3-...5223684&sr=8-1

Denon 591 http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-591-.../dp/B003H04Q8C

I think the Jamo606s looks great!

They are on sale for 350, but the black ones in the same model are $700 + shipping.

Rob - I'll try you throw $300 at her idea .

Do you guys have any alternative speakers that are good in that price range though that will go with the denon, and bic sub?

what about any of these:

One way to get a really great deal on speakers is to drive around parking lots and look for a white van!

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub

if you are concerned with color go for the Jamo S426 http://www.amazon.com/Jamo-S426HCS3-...5233965&sr=8-2 $363.37 ... However, you are best to go with the Jamo s606

ShopBLT are back ordered...

Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home Theater System has good reviews... http://www.amazon.com/Energy-Classic...5234259&sr=8-1 So, no need for a sub...

Also, when you make your choice, can you please come back and post and tell us what you think? Thanks

Just found Jamo A306 http://www.amazon.com/Jamo-HCS-5-1-c...1&sr=1-2-fkmr0 maybe? not sure......

I was throwing the idea out there that maybe he doesn't need upscaling. Which he doesn't.

The 306 is a ridiculous good deal, but I prefer the Dark Apple 606.

Like the prior poster said...tell your wife...

"Hey honey, you can have $300 to buy a new _____, or I'm using it to buy black speakers".

1. When you see the Dark Apple in person, she'll probably change her tune.
2. If you have a wife that wouldn't take the $300 and spend all day in a spa...I'd be shocked.

I don't like the A306 setup its a huge step down as in terms of speakers

I'd rather see you go with the Polk Monitor 50's, CS1, and 30's or the Pioneer set if you are on a tight budget and need black speakers
