I am currently building out a Theater room in our new home. The house is still being built so I have some time to decide on what i want and can jump on the best deal. I have ~$500 to spend for the surround sound. I had the room pre-wired for 5.1. Below are the options i have been looking at. The display will most likely be a Optoma HD33 Projector on a 120" screen.

Receiver:
Yamaha RXV373
Pioneer VSX822
Denon AVR-1612

Speaker Systems:
Klipsch HD500
Martin Logan MLT-2
Definitive Technology ProCinema 60

Newegg has various deals on the pioneer and yamaha receiver with both the Klipsch and Def Tech speakers. They also have been running a deal off and on for the Martin Logans. I would probably prefer the Denon with the Martin Logans but wanted to see what everyone else thought of these options as well as if you have any other better ideas for me for my price range.

Thanks

IMO save your money.... If your going thru all the trouble and money to have a theater room in your house with a 120" screen don't waiste your money on a 5.1 HTiB..... I would buy all seperate components and buy a 7.2 receiver so if you wanna add 2 more surrounds and a second sub you can do so.

By having a 120" screen and small HTiB speakers would be like owning a Lambroghini and only ever driving it to work which is only a mile away on 25mph speed limit roads.... Expect to spend as much or more for your audio equipment as for all video equipment, screen, and stands/racks.

Trust me, i would love to spend more money on the surround sound but I have to stick to a budget to start off with. It is something that can easily be upgraded later on and the way i go through technology, it probably will.

I am thinking of going with a 7.1 even though I highly doubt i would ever add the 2 extra speakers. Thinking of going with the Sony STRDH830. Better power compared to the other 5.1 receivers in my post above

Unless someone says otherwise, i think I am going to try and get the Martin Logan's when Newegg has them on sale again. I unfortunately missed the sale this weekend but seems like they are doing it once a month or more. Based on reviews, it seems they are better than the Klipsch HD500's. I have been toying with the idea of going with the Klipsch Quintet's and getting a sub to go with it.

I wouldn't get that Sony 830. For the $349 price of the Sony you could get a refurb Denon 891 which is more powerful, has better room correction software, built better and real speaker terminals instead of cheap spring clips.

And if you want a network receiver, look at the Denon AVR 1912.

Thanks afrogt. Def going to get the Denon AVR 1912 now. I had never heard of accessories4less.com

What are your thoughts on my speaker choices? Any suggestions on that?

I'd rather have larger speakers than satellites. If you have room for small towers look at one of these two deals both under $180.

Jamo S426 5.0 package

Pioneer FS-51, C21 and BS-21 5.0 speaker package on sale at Best Buy. Sale ends Saturday July 21.

Show this image to your local Best Buy salesperson. If not in stock maybe they can order for you?

Save up for a subwoofer if you don't have any money left.

If both options are available to you go for the Pioneer.

So, if I wanted a 7.1 system with the Pioneers, all I would need to do is add another pair of the BS-21s?

Yep, and Newegg puts them on sale for $50/pr once or twice a month.

some of the reviews say they dont have very crisp highs, does that raise concerns on the quality of the tweeters?

ok, just picked up the fs-51, c21, bs-21 combo from best buy. i then hooked up the speakers to make sure they worked, the speakers were the display models. i know the fs-51 speakers have the bottom two woofers crossovered different than the top woofer, but what is the best way to tell if the bottom two are working ok? i only have a really old receiver right now that only goes down to about 40hz i think. i can see the bottom two woofers moving a little bit with the bass up, but not nearly as much as the top woofer. i was thinking maybe the bottom two were only moving because the top woofer was vibrating the entire enclosure. thanks

I went to Best Buy and looked at the Pioneers from above. I personally think they are way too big. I had the room prewired and they have the wire jack 3/4 up the wall so towers wont really work cause I would have a wired running down the wall and bookshelf speakers just seem WAY too big. I had started looking into BIC America's originally but they are just as big as the Pioneer's. I havent made a final decision yet but i have been considering going with the Klipsch Quintets and getting either the Klipsch Synergy 12-HG or the BIC America 1220 sub. I really wish someone sold the martin logans locally. Seems like they are a bit hit or miss based on the reviews though which is what is scaring me. If i could swing it, i would just get the Martin Logan Motion 2 system with the Dynamo 500 sub. I just can swing $1300 on a set of speaker. They sound amazing though.

Any thoughts on the DENON AVR-1912 vs the 1913? Its $70 more for the newer model. Trying to figure out if its worth it.
