I'm looking for a HTIB under $300. I've been looking at the Yamaha 397 new, or several Onkyo refurbished units such as the 3500, 5400, and 5500. It's mainly for gaming and the occasional movie. I currently have a terrible Philips, so any will be an upgrade. I'm just curious to know what everyone thinks about these units and buying new vs refurbished. Also, is there a system I'm missing? Thanks in advance.

I always buy refurbished if I can. If you are in the States check out accessories4less . com oops looks like you probably already have. I would say the Denon as I like Denon. I would also look at the DHT591 (comes with better inputs and looks sharper IMO) with the boston speakers. Many people recommend the Denon because they come with speakers from a speaker company rather than "onkyo brand" speakers

Go with the Yamaha. $248 right now at Amazon. Perfect for what you will use it for and with no regrets.

I went with the Denon 1312BA, but I'm having issues straight away. As soon as I turn the system on the power button immediately starts blinking red. I can reset the system and it will work fine all day, but as soon as I turn it off and back on I immediately get the red light again.

Get the Yamaha and return the Denon.

really otto you think its a bad unit? I would check all your connections one at a time to see if yoou have any crossed wires... 9 times out of 10 a receiver issue is just faulty setup.

Well no, I would hope that he would do some rudimentary troubleshooting or call support before he returns it. If it's a refurb, I have mixed feelings on those, but that's just me.
