I have a fairly small room (14x15 feet) that I'd like to setup for a home theater. Not really enough space for large speakers. But 5 smallish speakers and a sub should be fine.

I was looking at the $700 or so Yamaha/Onkyo HTiB like the Onkyo HT-S9400THX and Yamaha YHT-695BL.

Do they cut corners on the speakers? For similar money or maybe slightly more I could get:
2 pairs of Polk TSI-100s or Monitor 35Bs that go on sale for $110 periodically
Polk CS center $110
Polk 10" sub $190.

Any thoughts on which would be better? Or other speakers that would provide better sound for similar prices?

HTiB speakers are typically very crummy. they are almost always the weakest link. I think the polk set you have would be great a real improvement except for that sub I hear nothing but bad about that sub. Here is a much better option for the same price http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=303-436 while you are there check out their speakers too they have a couple options in the same price range. once you do that search for threads comparing the three or four you are now confused about and there will be a million topics about the Polk TSi100s, the Pioneer sp-bs22lr, the Bic FH65, and the Bic DV62.

Good luck smile.gif

Very interesting. In my research the polk tsi100/monitor 35b seem to be considered a pretty good value, especially at $110.

However the reviews of the polk sub weren't good, thanks.

The sub you mentioned looks quite nice, I think it's my new favorite.

The reviews are very good and the specs seem quite good as well:
* 12" sub
* 150 watts/475 peak bash amp
* 25- 200 hz (plenty high for the tsi200)
* 5 years parts and labor
* 42 pounds

I saw a very similar model:
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=303-432
* 12" sub
* 200 watts/430 peak bash amp
* 23-180 hz (plenty high for the tsi200)
* 7 year speaker and 2 year amplifier warranty
* 45 pounds

Which would you get and why?

Sorry, there are numerous F12 vs V-1220 threads already. Short answer is not much. Small differences and the F12 is magnetically shielded. Search the forums or google to find many comparisons.
