Just spent a small fortune (for a recent university grad with loans) on slick new Samsung series 6 50' LED TV. Unfortunately the sound is rubbish, especially anything with bass. I plan on buying a great system in 4-5 years, but for now I'd like the best I can get for under $500.
I consider myself fairly knowledgeable when it comes to TVs, but I'm completely in the dark when it comes to audio. I've just been warned to stay away from the big TV brands (samsung, sony, lg)
Here's a few home theatre in a box setups that I'm looking at.
IIWY I would spend the money on two decent speakers and an AVR. HTIB tend to be consumer schlock. But what do you expect when you can get 8 speakers and an AVR for 350 USD.
I respectfully disagree. Speakers on all HTiBs are certainly not as good dynamically as standalones are, but the receiver's can be quite good and deliver you many years of solid use. If you purchase carefully, you can get a really nice system (receiver-wise) and just get by with the speakers until you are in a position to upgrade the speakers later on. Buying separates is always best, but, to get started, a carefully chosen HTiB can be a good investment if you understand the speaker limitations.
