We're finishing our basement because we need the space for a baby.
Also means we get to put in a small home theater.

It's a 12 x 16 rectangle that will have some openings to on the left side. I'm not really picky but don't want to overspend and just get the best price/performance. I'd be okay with $300 - $600 as far as budget. I don't believe I need to spend more to get good sound. I've been living with TV speakers for awhile now so I'm no audiophile.

What I'm looking for:
  • 3+ HDMI in, 1 HDMI out
  • 5.1
  • headphone jack

At Fry's, I was recommended these two:
Denon $599 http://www.amazon.com/Denon-DHT-1513BA-Channel-Theater-Acoustics/dp/B007R8U5RG/
Yamaha $349 http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-YHT-399UBL-5-1-Channel-Home-Theater/dp/B00BW0X6EE/

I heard them in the store and they both sounded good. There just seems to be so many options, perhaps there are no clear leaders at this price point?

Thanks!

What options are important to you? Or, more precisely, what options do think are important to you? Ultimately, it's what sounds best to you. Specs are just a guide but don't really tell you how well the system will perform (especially speaker specs).

I just got the YHT-399UBL and I was also considering the Denon, but the price gap was too big for me and the Yamaha doesn't leave much to be desired for a $350 HTiB (I was coming from a Sony HT-SS380, which was definitely a lesser performer than the 399U).

Thanks for the advice.
I'm going to play console games and watch blu-ray movies down there. I think the Yamaha should be sufficient to cover the room.

Fry's this week has the Yamaha RX-V675 and Denon E400 for $299. Those receivers are FAR better than what you get in either the Denon 1513 and Yamaha YHT-399. Each of those receivers normally goes for $599 by itself.
http://slickdeals.net/f/6093694-Yamaha-RX-V675BL-7-2-Channel-Network-AV-Receiver-299-tax-with-FS-YMMV

The sale ends Thursday.

Spec sheet on Denon e400

Spec sheet on Yamaha RX-V675

Then you can buy one of these sat/sub speakers systems for $299 or less which will be better than the speakers in either of those HTIB packages.

Since you were willing to spend $599 on the Denon 1513 system this is a much better option.
