What is the difference between these two models? I ordered a YHT-397BL from Best Buy (price matched to Tiger Direct), and when the package arrived I see it says YHT-399UBL on the box. I can't find anything on google to show the differences. Is this a big box model vs. manufacturer model?

I believe the 399 is the most current version for that series. If Plasma stops by here he may be able to give you more info because he just bought the 399. I'm not sure what the "U" signifies. "BL" is for the color, which is black. I have the older YHT-395 and have been quite happy with it.

I did some more digging on the yamaha website and was able to compare the 2 models side by side. It looks like the only difference is the receiver. The YHT-397 uses the HTR-3065, while the YHT-399U uses the HTR-3066. The differences between these 2 are as follows (from http://faq.yamaha.com/us/en/article/audio-visual/av-receivers-amps/rx/rx-v373_black_u/10254/7646/):

The RX-V375/HTR-3066 is the latest model in that series and
has the following differences over the RX-V373/HTR-3065:

1. Discrete amp configuration
2. Low jitter PLL circuitry helps optimize sound imaging

Power and Demensions are identical.
Rated Output Power (8 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.9 % THD, 2 ch driven) 85 W + 85 W
Dimensions (W x H x D) 17-1/8" x 6" x 12-3/8"

Weight
RX-V373
16.5 lbs
RX-V375
16.3 lbs

Note on Weight:
Do to improved manufacturing processes, material upgrades, etc. They shaved a few ounces off the weight. Nothing more.

I believe the speakers are the same for the 395, 397, and 399 (since my 399 speakers have the same exact specs as Otto's 395 speakers). The receiver is different (at least slightly) between the various models, though. In any case, I'd imagine the newer receiver is better if not the exact same in terms of performance/features.
