Suggestions on a short (height) receiver

My wife and I recently bought a new home. The home has a beautiful built in in which the TV lives. The center doors open and slide back in partially. Then the center turntable on which the TV is mounted pulls out. I have hardmounted a 40" tv which fills the space well on 22" shelf brackets so that it cannot tip or fall off.

The problem I'm having is that the large void behind the tv is echoing. Normal speech during a video is fine but songs (for example, Frozen songs) echo and sound pretty horrible.

Since college I've always run my audio through Sony Receivers (most recently a STR-K740P). However, with this setup there isn't really a good place to mount this. The rack space below the TV is only about 4" tall so my normal receivers aren't going to fit.

Does anyone make a decent unit that won't break the bank that will have at least 4 inputs and fit in that small of a space? If not, I suppose I could use the TV as a receiver and use the TV audio output to route everything to the receiver. However that does mean the TV has to be on to utilize the DVD player.

I know of no AVR less than 4" tall. The Marantz NR series is 4.2" tall but you need space for ventilation too.

Does the shelf come out between the top and bottom components?
