Alright fellas. I have my media room setup with the 42" Hitachi HDS69.....new today, a Dish HD DVR.....Yamaha upconvert DVD.....and now I need a good surround sound system to bring it all together. Anything and everything at or under $300 is what I'm looking for, but I don't want garbage either. Load me up with some good setups if you wouldn't mind. My room isn't huge so I don't need something with 20 speakers or anything like that, just something that sounds good and looks good as well.

Thanks in advance!

There really isn't much below $300. You've invested in other stuff and might reconsider your budget for sound. Of course, you can get an HTIB but the concept of "best" may not apply.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. I didn't really think about sound very much when I decided to get everything. I guess I could up it a few hundy and get the Bose 2.1 for $499. What about in that range....$500 and lower? Anything better than that Bose?

Yes. Almost anything.

Do a search on the forums, and you will find a wealth of information. At the moment the popular budget system is as follows:

Onkyo 504 receiver, refurb $159 shipped (Shoponkyo.com)
Bic H-100 Subwoofer, around $200 (Fleabay)
Vedolyne CHT front row speaker system $199 (Velodyne.com)

Check out the Yamaha and Onkyo setups, they both come with decent receivers that would be good to build around if you choose to upgrade down the road. If you can swing $600-650 you could put together a real nice seperates system that would keep the upgrade bug away for awhile. There's a thread on here now where a bunch of guys bought the Onkyo s790 and already dumped another $225 into a new sub so you might as well do it right the first time if you can afford it.

Depends on what you consider garbage. There are several HTIB systems in that range, with the Onkyo S590 receiving some of this most attention on this site. Search around this forum, and you will find information. The S790 is the popular system if your budget can get over $400 - and there are other options as well. If you want better than HTIB, then you are over $300-400 though.

is priced at $349 + taxes and duties. Needless to say the price is after the $50 Mail-in-rebate

Correction. The 790 system could be had for as low as 309 on CC's site. Purchase a 10% off 199$ or more coupon from ebay for $2. Apply that to the 399$ price before rebate and you have them for $359.99 BEFORE $50 rebate

This is for the SILVER 790 system though.

I haven't seen one of those Sharp units in ages. Not even eBay appears to have them.

Don't believe everything on the Interwebz! A duck's quack DOES echo!

Why do you only want 2.1 when you could get an Onkyo 600 5.1 system for under $180 with the 10% off Christmas special?

http://shoponkyo.com/detail.cfm?prod...il=1&ext_war=1

or the Onkyo 800 for $315 shipped with clubonkyo membership.

thanks,

They've been updating the last few days. I was able to get into onkyos home page earlier and it has a completely new look so I'm sure that's it.

Here is what I went with:
Onkyo TX SR505 ShopOnkyo.com
$124.10 Including shipping $10 off for joining Club Onkyo and 10% Christmas Discount
Harmon Kardon HKTS 14 5.1 Speaker Package from Harmon store at Fleabay $117.50 +$35 Shipping.

Audi with good speaker wire $300, Vizio 32" LCD $577. A3 HD-DVD (w/10 movies) $197. Total Package under $1099

No it's not the best, greatest, future proof system but those will be on sale in a year and I'll put this system in the bedroom when I upgrade. FYI the SR505 does not do lossless digital audio over HDMI, I can live with that for the price.
