I've made DIY masks for 2 different screens, a DIY 89" and an Elite 120". Both screens were 16:9 and I masked them to 2.40:1 using pretty much the same method on both.

For the DIY 89":

For the Elite 120"

Thanks for the ideas. I'm going to use the foam board. Can some one tell me what size the bars are on a 110" 16:9 screen when viewing 2:35.1.

Thanks
Lance

Someone is starting out right. Masking, not borders. Now that's a smart solution.

110 = 54 X 96.....1.78

41 X 96.....2:35 (actually this would be 96.35" wide)

so the difference is 13" divided by 2 equals 6.5" for each mask.

Depending on how particular you are it could be off by a quater inch.
If you want exact put a pic up and measure on your screen but for most my calculations should be good.

Your best bet is to put an image on the screen and take actual mesurements.

Put up an image of a film in the ratios you want to mask. I was lazy on my measurements on my latest masks and after covering them with velvet found that I was entirely unhappy with their size. The image would overlap the mask by 3/4 an inch at the top and bottom. It was really annoying so I painstakingly centered my pj to the screen, projected a 2.35:1 and a 2.40:1 movie on the screen and measured the bars. On my 120" screen I got 7.5 inches for each bar, the first set I cut to 8.25 inches. I am now very happy with the masks because on both the ratios I listed above there are no grey bars and no light over spray.
