I'm gonna state for anyone else who sees this that Flat Black is a horrible choice. Ugly...dusty looking. Not really all that light absorptive,( sheds blue reflections...) and represents extremely limited, "Old School" thinking.
I just KNOW the better half really doesn't like it. Yes, it it's bound to be an improvement compared to a very light or white colored ceiling....but any advantages are lost when the disadvantages of using flat Black are taken into account.
It's just a overly simplified solution that "seems' to make sense, but in fact makes little sense at all as opposed to correctly chosen darker shades of Flat or satin colors.
A far, FAR better choice is to paint the ceiling a 4x darker shade of the Wall color in Flat. (...unless the walls are white...) Your room would have looked splendid with a deep, very dark Flat Red ceiling.
Even a dark Gray is infinitely superior to black "looks" wise, and easily just as effective. Gray would have complimented the Red Walls and Black out Screen wall with classy distinction.
Sorry to be so critical, but I've done well over a hundred Theaters, and only two had black ceilings...and those were black because that color was pre-existing. Looked like a dusty, streaky mess when room lights were up.
Even the Fiber Optic Star Field ceilings I've done were done in a "Midnight Blue".
Well, I was at CEDIA when you first posted, and I know I can't reach out in time for everyone, and I know Jim meant well....but Gee....Black!**
My heart is breakin'
** Although it may seem counter-intuitive, if a Black is to be considered, it should be a Satin, so the surface is tighter, and shows to be "Blacker" by 2-3x over a Flat. Reflections are no more an issue with a satin, but the appearance is so very much improved when the lights come up and the ceiling looks to be a deep black, not a hideous shade of "Grayish black.

Will guys I checked the ceiling this morning and it's very dark gray. I think a lighter gray would be better.

Painted our ceiling flat black 6 months after finishing our HT. It was a PITA to cover the textured ceiling but turned out great. Really defines the space and wife liked it too.
Yours looks good

MississippiMan,
Thanks for your help. Hope to see you again in SF bay area. Watched Star Wars last night and I must say I do like the color of Hush. Next projects is to redo my screen wall, install new carpet, new furniture and sound treatments to the room.

I was thinking about painting the screen wall the same color as my ceiling. Right now my wall is flat black and put 3" trim boarder around my screen. I'm looking at doing sound treatment to screen wall, side wall and bass traps on front corners. Check out Amazon for sound treatments.

Let's see.
You had to spend over $3K to have that be true...and in the dark, a under $800.00 Da-Lite High Power would do exactly the same thing. Seems a bit of overkill to any sensible person.
Challenges aside, there is nothing at all special enough about sch expensive screens that cannot be duplicated, nor are the advantages in any way worth such extravagant prices.
Your gonna lose that argument every time when you come up against anyone with any real actual experience in such matters.

Well I can agree on that point because any flat black is decidedly ugly. It really does not take too dark a surface to make a noticeable difference. The real issues crop up when someone must crowd a screen too close to the ceiling or sidewalls, and those surfaces are too reflective in nature.
However I stand firmly behind the well founded belief that spending $1000's of dollars to allieviate that one sticking point is akin to buying a Dump Truck to bring the groceries home in. And for many, the insuing viewing cone restrictions are detrimental to having effective side seating.
I'm just saying that anyone who is predisposed to spending so much for any screen usually has a Theater that is wide and tall enough that concerns about light scatter are no where near as critical. Well that, and they usually have done a decent job of choosing paint schemes.
Just to be clear, as far as the BD SCREEN, I can and do appreciate what it can and does accomplish for those who choose it for the right reasons. I simply object that it is promoted as being the "Best Solution" for the things that all end users in those respective situations. Were it more reasonably priced, it would garner far more acceptance as a truly viable solution. As it stands now, It's over priced and certainly over hyped.
