Re-building my theater and I'm moving away from my Dragonfly 110" screen and going Acoustically Transparent. Love the new Elite Screens A4K material and I found out that they will sell a 10' by 10' piece of material for $63. Unbelieavable price. What would you guys use for backing for this? Have been reading about the Spandex solutions and blackout cloth. I just need want whatever will be best for AT and also won't look hideous through the screen. I'm looknig to go to about 130" 2.35. Was hoping to go 138" diagonal but that ends up being 127" wide, 7" wider than the fabric and figured it would be a pain in the butt to seam.

Thanks so much for your input.

Well even though your not using DIY material for the screen surface, you should use white spandex for the backer.

Thanks Mississippi Man! Been reading the forums for years. First time poster. Was looking at doing one of the combination Sheerweave time solutions, but got a sample of the Elite 4k material and for $63 hard to turn down. How does the White Spandex do for Acoustical Purposes?

See post #39 in the following thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1416407/my-recent-experience-with-spandex-as-a-screen-and-some-questions/40_40

Zheka tested grey spandex vs seymour center stage XD material. This ought to give you an idea of what you can expect from white spandex (which is to say it should do fine!)

That's good info to know. I'll definitely try picking some up this weekend to test with. If I had back lights behind my screen (using a fake screen wall), does the spandex allow light through the other way. To see the speakers? Or should I try building GOM panels (currently using the FR701) and have those behind the screen that can be removed if needed. That could be my backing, would be AT, just not sure if it's solid enough to block the lights that much?

Thanks guys for your help.

You can order it directly from Elite. It's called the A4K pack. It's a 10'x10' sheet. No backing, no grommets etc. For instance for the screen itself with all of that included and cut to size for the 138" 2.35 I wanted it was $900. Big difference.

I did pick up the White Spandex from Jo Ann's. Going to build the screen later this week or early next. Will post pics once I get it done. Thanks for everyone's help.

They are just rolling it out. You can call Elite and order from them. I wanted to keep my screen size and the 10' wide piece just wasn't big enough so I went Spandex but I hope it works for you.

Good.

I hope this puts this misdirected Thread about Mfg Screen material to bed. In reality it should have been sent over to 'Screens" at the start...but O did try to answer the OP's concerns.

Mfg Screen material....we don't need it......we can do as well or better with "Non-Mfg Screen" DIY materials like Spandex..

Do we know Spandex is superior to the A4K? Have there been any comparisons done? Please provide some links. I have been following the DIT AT screens and have not seen any of this information. At this price this looks like a valid option if it works well.

Thank You,
Derek

At this conjecture, more than enough basic visual and sound tests and evaluation have been made. But why not come down off the Lurker Fence and get some samples yourself?

Things to note:

Spandex has a tighter weave yet is less dense. Assumption alone would point to it have a greater degree of AT ability. So much so that 2x layers still produce almost unnoticeable attenuation or combing effects.

The same tighter weave will augment 4K resolution. The A4K material is more a case of taking a promotional advantage of a upcoming terminology than any real and noticeable degree of any pristine surface construction.

You won't find virtually any AT material in a contrast enhancing color shade. Such material already has issues with undue light loss, and the industry's seeming solution is to try to increase gain...and that often highlights weave or perforation
