I always jump from
"Im BRUCE!" to Darla tapping on the Tank.

That's because I basically use certain scenes from Nemo for Demo purposes.

But I will do the watchin' again because I have Nemo 3D now, and at least 3 different Panny AE 8000u based systems to view it on.

Just finished white layer. Gonna hang it in a bit.

130" diagonal 2.35:1. White moleskin on black.

Came out flawless. Thanks to help from my seamstress mother ❤️

More pics to come

Just a wee little 127" diagonal White over Silver Milliskin Spandex Screen I have had the privilege of helping another member construct.

Frame is Select Poplar joined with the Kreg system. This screen will essentially be a "Floating Zero Edge" affair, with a Sony VPL-VW600es 4K doing the screen great justice.

Hi everyone!
I'm not sure if this question needed a new topic so I'm just posting it here.
I've done a lot of reading here about DIY screens and I got a pretty good idea how I'm going to do it.
Except I'm not sure yet for which screen material I should go. I got a bit confused with all the different spandex combinations and blackout screens.. :s
I have an Optoma HD20 for some years now and it has always been shining on my white-ish painted wall with no screen.
So I'm not sure which is the way to go now. I found that the HD20 has a contrast of 4,000:1 which is pretty low I believe.
And 1,700 Lumens which I have no idea of if that is good or not.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Hello Mr Flopsie! (...gotta love that handle... )

Welcome aboard AVS!

Compared to today's current crop of DLP PJs, 4K:1 is verrrry low

1700 Lumen output can do some things well...other things not so much. It is all dependent upon screen size, PJ throw, Room colors and lighting conditions, and the need (if any) to accommodate ambient light.

Example: You could easily rock a 110" Silver over White Milliskin Spandex Screen with the HD20 set at 13'

Fill in those blanks and you will get purposefully directed suggestions from several people, most likely.

Thanks for the reply! Let's see..
Screen size is around 100". Except for the white wall the other walls are a light brown/beige color. During the day I have very minimal ambient light, but most light can be controlled. I assume pj throw is the distance between the pj and the wall, that is 380cm(150inches).
As a student I was always happy with my budget HD projector but I feel I can push it a bit further if I build a screen for it.
Hope the info helps

Awwwwllrightythen........

You could easily rock a 100" Silver over White Milliskin Spandex Screen with the HD20 set at 12'-6" (19 foot lambert @ 0.8 gain)

The Silver Spandex will really help boost the perceived Contrast off the screen, making that old HD20 look like you shot it with a Lance Armstrong Tonic.

Everything else involves Painting onto Solid or Flexible materials. Or the Wall again.

If it is to be the Wall or any other material other than Spandex, please start another Thread dedicated to that application.

Moleskin eh? While I'm certain it looks great and that your pleased, I am surprised at that choice for the Topmost surface. For the Rear....absolutely...because Moleskin is a Thicker material and will block light absorbtion better than Milliskin. But the the use of Moleskin should be considered only if one is willing to accept a lessor level of AT performance. Otherwise dual layers of Milliskin is the most assured way of meeting / besting virtually all Mfg versions of AT screens in the aural sense.

Milliskin has been proven to be the best choice for some time now. Acoustically it is far enough ahead of Moleskin to be audibly noticeable to some...if not most people, and certainly trumps Moleskin soundly (...a pun that...) when effectively measured.

But for me (...and others...) the overriding aspect that matters is visual clarity, and Milliskin is "Much" smoother material than Moleskin. Images will never be as sharp using Moleskin as they can be / are using Milliskin.

As stated, I'm sure your extremely happy, so no intent to expectorate on your Post Toasties here. Your installation looks extremely well done!

But should anyone read your postings and note your materials used, they need to know what is the de facto standard that is recommended.

Thanks for the help!
Would that be matte milliskin or shiny?
And a last thing, I just noticed that people mainly choose spandex because their speakers are placed behind the screen(not in my case) or is it just because it looks good?
Again, many thanks. If I start building I'll post some pictures

You want matte

It may be AT but it looks amazing as well. If you aren't going with speakers behind the screen I still highly recommend this material

I was actually wondering if there were other threads for non spandex screen material. Like I previously mentioned I didn't go with spandex. TBH curiosity has me intrigued about how spandex would pair with my Ben Q W7000. I got it from a friend here on AVS and he used spandex for all 600 lamps hrs of use and still uses it with his JVC I believe. Anyway as it is known, the black levels are not the best but certainly livable lol! The picture is much sharper and crisper and colors pop more than the test Ben Q 1070 I tried. So if you gentlemen know of any other good screen threads would you be so kind to link?

I read through the thread and, while it was touched on somewhat, I am wondering how large a screen you could build with spandex that is 60" wide. Obviously it depends on the material, but in general, how large can you reasonably go? I think I saw someone suggest that the Milliskin could stretch approximately by 1/3, which would be to about 80" in terms of height (I could be mistaken on that). Is that the actual screen height or would it be smaller to accommodate attaching the screen to the Screen Tight? On a 16:9 screen that's approximately a 165" diagonal. The height is obviously the limiting factor in the equation.
