Covering Screen

We covered the screen in spandex over the weekend. It took a little while to figure out exactly how to do it but once we figured it out it was amazingly simple.

I cannot stress enough that THIS IS A 2 PERSON JOB

I did a white under silver spandex screen 110-diy-spandex-screen since in out test phase the silver just gave us much more vivid colors and really deep blacks.

Since the screen was already mounted I had to take it down. I placed 2 bankers boxes on each side of the screen to support it and then I popped out each of the 3 hinge pins. I then removed the 3 hinges off the back of the screen. We then set down the screen in the middle of our living room and pulled out the white spandex. Unrolled the spandex to where I had about 5 inches on each side to play with.

I used screen tight to secure the screen in place. We started on the top, moved to the bottom and then did the sides leaving the corners till last. When we found is that if you took the spandex and just layed it on the screen tight channel and went to town with the screen split, the spandex would actually pull in and cause creases. so we had to take the spandex, lay it over the screen tight and while I would hold the spandex in place my wife would push in the screen tight every 6 or so inches. we would do 3 foot sections

We would then halve each of the sections again, creating a serpentine type of pattern

And then we would do this again

Once there was a pushed in piece of screen spline ever 1/2 inch or so, we rolled it into place

Once the top was done we moved to the bottom. we would pull the spandex over the bottom edge and then hold the spandex in place with some 5 and 10 lbs dumbbells (sorry no picture) and then we would start at one end, while I would stretch the screen my wife would go and do the screen spline in the same way we did above. This was repeated on the sides as well

Here it is covered in all white

Once the white was done (we haven't done the corners yet) we did the same thing for the silver.

To do the corners we just laid the fabric into a square type pattern on each corner and threw a few staples in (staples are easy to remove so if we ever needed to recover the screen we could)

I then reattached the hinge plates and placed them over the spandex

At this point we couldn't figure out how to make a nice and neat corner with the hinges in place so I took a few screws out and wrapped the spandex over the hinge plate and screwed though the spandex into the hinge
