I'm going to document a ambitious project. Getting started on this next Monday, it is my intention to build out and complete a Retrofit Front Projection Screen & projector installation, which will also include the construction and finishing of two supportive Knee Walls, one of which will contain a Slide-in A/V cabinet...relocate two Speakers to the Knee Walls...refinish the ceilings, and paint in a Dark Brown Shadowbox effect........and get'ter all done in three days time.

Below is a simplistic layout of the proposed work. Documentation will include Paint Stirring, Straining, and Spray Painting Videos, as well as the required Screen Trimming, hanging of the PJ, and lastly....screen shots.

Watch this space (...or subscribe...) for updates, should I somehow get a chance to accelerate the schedule

OK.....4 out of five. (...I for got to take a last image of the Sintra up in place...but it is hung...)
But I also built and painted a 3 Shelf Cabinet on wheels that allows itself to be pushed back from the hole it resides in to easily access the rear area behind all that new framing.

The progress made:

OH yeah...added another item to do as well......

Adding two In Ceiling Speakers for a 6th & 7th channel. Got the wires ran.

1st Coat....note the quick recovery after the trip... biggrin.gif

Second Coat.

Sprayed and shot at after just 30 minutes dry time after last coat (5th)

Lights off ! :

Gotta go out to finish painting out the screen wall, Hang the R & L Front Speakers....trim the screen....paint out the ceiling and side walls in a Graphic oriented manner with some ultra Dark Brown paint....hook up A/V equipment. A full day (9-10 pm probably...) but the whole intent is to show how quickly such can be done even with one soul doin' all the doin'.

Also...screenies of 5th Element and Oblivion are up coming upon completion tonight.

First Off....a initial image of the completed Theater, under Flash (...'scuse the "dots"...Len's had some dust on int apparently...)

OK...some 5th Element Screen Shots. All were taken with the Cans on at the level shown in the first shot below, however I did zoom in a bit after the first.
Also, in the 1st image below, note how well the "Ultra Dark Brown Hole" absorbs the light coming from the extremely close upper edges of the screen

The lighter Silver Fire v2.5 3.0 was intended to both allow for a dynamic 3D image as well as permit use of Low Lamp.

The Screenies above however were taken on Normal Lamp Mode. The PJ has NOT been calibrated or adjusted in any way...it is "as is" out of the box, so the images you see reflect how both the PJ and SF screen present the image unadulterated in any way.

I will say that the image is incredibly vivid and bright on Normal...almost too right for the Camera's CMOS sensor and metering to take non-blown-out images. Hence the reason I zoomed a bit to allow for some attenuation.

As expected -- very nice.

One question though. I'm surprised you didn't paint the screen wall black. Well, more an observation than a question. smile.gif

  1. The Wife didn't want "Black anything"....
  2. The existing Tan color did allow for a substantial darkening. To the point where in the dark, it essentially disappears.
  3. I hate any black that is not of Black Velvet / Protostar depth.

Excluding the situation involving this room, and the proximity of the right & left Top Corners of the Screen to the sloped ceilings, the color of a Screen wall is seldom anything to even concern one's self with.

When a Screen is in use, in the dark, none if it's light produced can curve around to strike the wall, so essentially, even a bright white will appear Black.

HOWEVER....if any projected light bounces off an adjoining surface, and returns to strike that wall....that's entirely different. Even then, while the wall being Black...or any other dark flat color, will serve to suppress reflections, if any of that returning / extraneously produced light strikes the screen, the color of the screen wall will mean diddly.

So the color of a screen wall might be irrelevant, or it may have much to do with suppressing incoming ambient light or combating reflected projected light.

Or...it might just be a visual preference....or not, as was the case in this instance.

This just in.................

The Wifey decided to paint out the rest of the lighter Brown room surfaces a "Blue" color. eek.gif

Surprisingly, it doesn't look too bad at all, owning to the fact she kept the Blue muted and Flat, and a deep enough hue so as to not make the room look like a Living Room or something.

Pictures are coming....so steel yur wool. tongue.gif
