Retro fit cheap motorized screen with pro AT material

Has anyone bought a cheap favi or bratech screen and swapped out the material?

Hi, I am a newbie, with the desire to hang a screen in my control room over the mix position of my 6x4x3m recording studio in a basement with very controllable light.

Optoma hd25-lv from ceiling
ideal screen 2.35:1, 3290x1400mm viewable

Looking to adapt a 180inch favi or similar cheapie with good AT material. Reduce the amount of pull down to a max of 1520 total including rod to make 2.35:1

So how easy are these screens to dismantle?
Has anyone got their local seemstress to sew in black boarders?

Im in australia and I havent seen anybody selling kits, preferably tab tension, yet.

Much appreciated for any input.

Pretty much a "fergittabowdit" kinda thing. Not that you should arbitraily dismiss the idea, just be advised that others have tried...and died.

However there was one member over in the Baltic States in Europe who converted a stained Retractable non tensioned screen to one with new material and made it tensioned. That was about 2 years ago. So one cannot say "It cannot be done..."

You'd have to be very precise in getting the material perfectly squared upon the Roller, and the Screen mechanism would have to have a Adjustable Drop ability. As for the Border, that too would have to be perfectly fitted to the screen, and Sewing almost always will result in small degrees of pulling around stitching unless the Threads are very tiny, and extremely closely spaced.

If you do manage it, document it and share. Many might take inspiration.....or justifiably run screaming the other direction.
