PVC Foam Board Dark Grey Project

I bought myself a decent sheet of this over last Saturday. have it hanging from the ceiling. will be constructing a frame and gluing it to the back for support. haven't got around to mounting my projector yet since i haven't had the time yet. screen is a bit reflective but for now it'll do til i finalize my paint mix and get the frame done. 42x72 sheet for the size. two inch border will be put onto it using carl's velvet tape.

Do yourself the favor of masking off the area (width) of the perimeter that you will be applying the Carl's Tape to

Although the Carl's Tape is pretty sticky, it really doesn't "tack" well over paint.

Also, use some Frog Tape if possible so that your screen edges will be sharp and well defined. Lastly, after pulling the Tape free (...at a angle away from the painted surface...) be sure to wipe the unpainted Boarders with a very mild, diluted detergent solution to assure that the Foam Board's surface will allow the Carl's Tape to have maximum adherence.

Frog tape. i'll put that on my shopping list.

i mounted my projector finally last night a second time since the original spot was a bit too low. took me a few hours but got it just about right minus being off by almost half an inch horizontally on the screen. it's livable. here are some new pics. the camera doesn't pick up the reflective surface. i used the yellow screen color in the settings after these pictures were taken and that fixed my dingy color appearance. better white balance now. i can definitely say that the dark grey really helps with the blacks. the blacks are very good with the lights off. i'm off to try another paint mix to match the dark grey plastic but not lose the whites.

Hi Worminfested, that is a nice screen you build yourself. May i ask which projektor you are using? I've been looking out for a pvc board like yours but didn't find that much in germany. Did you buy it at a hardware store?

i'm using a Benq HT2050. the dark grey tone makes the blacks so much better. unfortunately, the material is reflective and reminds me of the metallic silver paint i recently got to experiment with. doesn't make the picture sharp which is why i'm painting it. i got the material at a plastics shop in my area that has been in business since the 50s. 72x42 piece 1/8" hardware store had some stuff but nothing worth dealing with.

Check with your local Sign Making shops for what is called "Expanded PVC Foam-board" 6mm thick

You might also look for Clear or White Acrylic Plastic Sheeting in 6mm thickness

@MississippiMan i found i perfect mix for a diy screen but not sure on something. i can secure a big enough piece for a 95" 1/4" pvc screen but it comes in white and black. for rolling, would a black board not do well with a grey mix and darken it too much or throw off the colors? or is painting on white be better?

my paint job on my dark grey pvc piece turned out pretty good and will use the same mix for my new pvc slab that i'll buy after the sign place moves to their new location at the end of the month. will get the white version. i'll post some new pics of what the current screen looks like. blacks are nice and same with the colors.

Spoiler!

Hopefully the full-size version will turn out just as good or better.
Along with the upcoming pictures, would you also be willing to explain which paints and paint-amounts you ended up liking most for this?

Easy $25 DIY black (or any color) ALR paint +$40-$50sprayer screen mix smooth/clean and very easy to learn spraying with little/no mess.
Simple $25-40 DIY black/dark-grey ambient-light rejecting screen, grab two things from a local store..mix..roll..done.

Picture time. seems like these look better on my phone than what they actually look like on a big screen. no color shifting the colors and whites are a bit dim compared to a white screen but they look good. blacks are improved. i have some samples from Carl's and man the white screen ones look so washed out compared to my grey. the alr and the progray and flexi gray are kind of similar to my mix. i didn't go too dark of grey. didn't do any precise measuring but instead did what i felt was best according to the shade of grey. 14 year old grey and white paint with a brand new silver metallic 2017 paint. i'd say half grey half white and probably less than half a quart of silver grey a smidge of flat minwax polycrylic tossed in. my new pvc foamboard (it's not foam but pvc/just what they call it) will be either 77 or near 100 depending on which place i get it from. since one can get sheets up to 5' 10' and the other is stuck at 4 x 8.

upped the exposure to show the bars a bit more. need to get 2 yards of black velvet to help the contrast since the ceiling kills it.

i got the surrounding area around the screen fancied out but i think i'll hold off on painting it for now. the room is light controlled. the pvc board is slightly off white but looks mighty nice as is without paint. the latest mix i fiddled with looks good but maybe i'll revisit that thought later on. a pic of my gear is included here. simple setup.

i'm back on track for painting the screen. I did a rough first coat the other week but now that I found a good all around mix, the weather is the only thing holding me back for the moment. contrast looks good. I have the projecter with brilliant color on and in cool temp mode.
