Cross posted from the main forum since DIY are a lot more imaginative!

In my house I have attic access to the ceiling. I want to get a recessed look for my screen. Can I use a regular wall mounted manual screen and mount it on the ceiling joist? The drywall will take half an inch of the screen. I can always access the region via the attic so repair etc. is not a problem. I plan to finish the drywall such that only the minimum required gap is left in the ceiling to allow the screen to drop through and also to allow the pull rod to operate.

Any issues with this approach?

In order to compensate for the loss of viewing area because of the recessed installation, I plan to buy a larger 4:3 screen. I need an 8" drop at the top in any case. Any issues in painting the top of a regular screen (HCMV from da-lite) black to reduce the glare and reflection from the portion we will not project into.
