Here are some pics of mine. It is DW 114" diagonal. My picture taking skills are not very good, so I don't have any with a projected image. The ones I did take looked horrible.

I was pretty much dead set on purchasing Carada's Classic Cinema White screen when I read the laminate thread. I figured for $72 it was worth a try. So I bought the WilsonArt Designer White screen and put it up affixing the 3 Carada samples I had from Top to Bottom, High Contrast Grey, Classic Cinema White, and Brilliant White on top of the laminate. Now, as I don't have my Panasonic PT-AX100U yet, I used a Toshiba DLP projector from work running off of my laptop to do some testing. As you can see the laminate is almost an exact match for the Classic White. While I think Carada makes the best screen available for the money, this laminate alternative is an incredible value! I'll post my final pics when I have everything setup and calibrated properly.

Interesting shot, rastan. I can't see a difference between the Carada white and DW.

Rastan,

Nice comparison, it makes me want to try the DW laminate even more. It looks just as good as the Carada material.

I have to say that I am surprised and even skeptical that the Carada Brilliant White material isn't brighter than the Carada Cinema White, as the Brilliant White has a 1.4 gain vs. the Cinema White's 1.0 gain. Is this due to the photo limitations, or maybe the position of the Carada pieces on your screen?

The Brilliant White is definitely a little brighter, unfortunately, the pics I took seem to all have darker areas in that quadrant. I took the pics with a Canon PowerShot s410 with no flash and very little ambient light in the room.

Here's another pic I took where this is more visible:

As soon as I complete my construction, I try taking some more pics.

I already posted these in the HD-DVD sub-forum, but they belong in the Laminate Showcase too:

Terrific shots, Clarence. I also have a DW screen, although only a 92", so I can look forward to getting my 1080p projector when I retire my HC3000!

If only it were possible to shrink a Sony G90 to the size of a Mitsu HD1000U, I might be able to get approval to go the CRT route. :-)

CRT is worth the weight

Plus, this projector has been doing 1080P since before most of you guys knew how to spell HDTV. It has over 8,500 hours on it, still the original tubes, and hardly any visible wear... several more years of top-notch performance. No bulbs to buy. No rainbows. No screendoor effect. Deep blacks, incredible contrast.

Here's the other HD-DVD I pre-ordered back in October which finally arrived last night: the James Taylor Musicares tribute concert. I posted these screenshots in my HD-DVD review...

These CRT images are just beautiful. It's too bad all development seems to be going to fixed pixel technology. Hopefully that development will someday in the next decade bring us image quality comparable to what good CRT's could do in the last decade!

I won't belabor this, but VDC is still developing and producing FP CRTs. One of the guys (Scott(tse)) is a member of AVS. That being said, 9" CRTs can do 1080p and some 8" CRTs can do 1080p as well. Since there is no HT source greater than 1080p, there is no need for higher resolutions. Of course, a VDC 9500 will do 2048x1536.

How do you ever get to 2.35:1 aspect ratio with the G90?
How do you ever get to 1000 lumens output with the G90?

I don't want to go off topic in this thread, but CRT projectors will allow any aspect ratio.

In this example, I can change the aspect ratio by changing the height of the raster on the phosphor face. This is called constant width.

CRTs are not fixed pixel devices... they form the image using scan lines. You can adjust the height and width of the raster, you can also adjust the number of lines that are used inside of that height (the vertical resolution), and you can control how fast those lines are being drawn (e.g., 30 Hz or 60 Hz or 72 Hz or 120 Hz or any frequency in between).

There are lots of tutorials online, like this one:
http://easymamecab.mameworld.net/html/monitor2.htm

But the main difference between CRT projectors and CRT monitors or CRT TVs is that a CRT projector uses 3 tubes... red, green, and blue... the 3 primary images are converged to form the picture on the screen.

In addition to being a little brighter, the Carada BW material has a smaller, smoother texture than the DW laminate. I have both materials and I can notice the difference. This might be a factor for those using a 1080p projector. See post 2226 of this thread.

BTW great screen shots Clarence.
