I sent an email to the Editor with my complaint [I know Kal has no control over this]

Got my print copy today, looks like you are enjoying the player. Did you by chance notice any difference in sound quality between the rca and xlr outputs?

Kal, Last week I was right on the edge of buying a Sony XA9000ES for a fair price ($1K) on Audiogon when your column in the May Stereophile arrived. I actually received it on Wed, 4/15, as I was leaving town for 5 days - read your column that night and decided to purchase the XA5400ES instead (have not actually bought it yet). I have been planning to upgrade my CD/SACD source player for about 10 months now and doing my research, and I am trying to purchase only the best units possible at reasonable prices - I'll never be able to pay $8K+ for any AV component.

So, thanks, Kal! : You saved me from a bad case of buyer's remorse. Now I still need a pre/pro (I just purchased an Anthem PVA-7 - my first multichannel amp purchase) that handles the audio/video over HDMI (I have both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray - 64 titles at last count) without messing with the HD image and inserting handoff pops and other noises while decoding the HD audio codecs.

I really just want to purchase the latest Onkyo/Integra prepro and be done with it, but I have been spoiled by the analog sound I get from my Primare SPA-21 and don't want to settle for a step down with my CDs (300+) and occasional LP.

I read excellent things about the Marantz AV-8003 but there is that concern expressed by 'linnite' that it can't apply Audyssey to DSD over HDMI. How long do you think we have to wait until the dust settles and the tests are made to find this 'magic' prepro? Again thanks, Jeff

I've been using the "old" Sony DVP9000es in my tv/bedroom system (which is 2 channel only), using the analogue outs, as a CD/SACD player and am quite please with the sound.

Kal, would you be able to say if there's any great tonal difference (brighter, warmer. leaner) between that old player and the XA5400es?

Thanks.

I just got one and am totally surprised. I connected it via HDMI to my Denon receiver and was not expecting the sound (SACD) to be any different than the Oppo, but it is very different and for the better, much better soundstage and the surrounds, which before were hardly noticeable, become more present, much more of an enveloping sound.

Ok I know many of you will tell me I'm dreaming, bits are bits, but maybe because of the better build it is a better transport than the Oppo.

Even as a CD player over HDMI, another revelation. This time I listened to all the tracks in my personal "Test CD" and was so surprised to hear a lot of subtle details I hadn't heard before, if you want a track to test agains the Oppo, try the Overture to L'Italiana in Algeri with Claudio Abbado/Vienna Philharmonic.

I may have missed this in the previous discussion, but does this player offer any bass management functions?

I run a 5.0 setup and do not plan to get a subwoofer, so I need either the player or receiver til redirect the LFE to the fronts. Not sure what would be the best place.

My current player - XA3000ES can do this - but I expect the XA5400ES to be much better. However, I couldn't see the bass management function in the manual I downloaded?

There is no bass management because multichannel is HDMI only. Bass management is handled by the receiver or processor.

There is none since it is not needed. This player only has 2 channel analog outs so it assumes you have full fronts for stereo. For multi-channel it only has an HDMI out so it expects your processor/receiver to perform the BM functions.

Thanks for the answers. For multichannel, I just assumed it would be better to handle bass management in the player, because it would allow you to run the receiver/processor in pure direct mode or similar.

Sure but, if the player has to do a lot of processing, it will have to convert DSD to PCM thereby defeating the goal of direct processing from DSD to analog, anyway.

But would I still have this problem in the receiver? That is, would it have to convert DSD to PCM in order to do bass management? Or would this be done in the analogue domain?

My receiver is Marantz SR5003, but I'm basically wondering if the need for bass management also means that I can't avoid PCM conversion somewhere in the chain

Thanks for the answers

I do not not know your AVR but I doubt it will do any analog processing with any digital input.
