Blu-Ray Audio seems like it's starting to catch on, albeit very slowly. I thought it would be helpful to maintain a list of titles available in this format, since this information seems to be spread out in multiples threads - usually a separate thread for each title. It's especially difficult to find info online, since searches for Blu-Ray Audio keep turning up musicals, concerts, etc.

To be clear on definitions, for the purposes of this thread, Blu-Ray Audio will only cover hi-res music on Blu-Ray disc, not video. For example, concerts on Blu-Ray (where it is intended for people to watch) would not count. On screen UI is fine. If people find this restriction unhelpful (one can always turn off the video display after all) I could see it making sense to do away with it. (Update: There is now a separate thread for concert videos on Blu-Ray which lend themselves to audio-only listening. If you're interested in that content as well, check it out here. Thanks CDLehner!)

Here's the list of Blu-Ray Audio titles as far as I know right now:

Rock

  • Mojo by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
  • Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers: The Live Anthology (Blu-Ray Audio discs not sold separately AFAIK)
  • Damn the Torpedoes by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (releasing on 11/9/2010)
  • Ghosts by Nine Inch Nails
  • The Social Network Soundtrack by Trent Reznor
  • Neil Young Archives Volume 1
  • Minotaur box set by the Pixies - Includes 5 albums: Come on Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova, and Trompe le Monde (Blu-Ray disc not sold separately AFAIK)
  • Warriors of the world - Manowar (Heavy metal, Germany)
  • Albert Lee - Tearing It Up on AIX Records
  • Rush - Moving Pictures on Mercury Records
  • Patricia Barber "Modern Cool"

Classical

  • Percy Grainger/Kristiansand Symfoniorkester: Grieg - Piano Concerto
  • Ole Bull: Violin Concertos
  • Divertimenti by TrondheimSolistene, Britten, Bacewicz, Bjorklund, and Bartok
  • Flute Mystery by Fred Jonny Berg
  • TrondheimSolistene in Folk Style
  • Sonar by Ellen Sejersted Bodtker
  • 2L: Nordic Sound - 2L Audiophile Reference Record
  • Corigliano: Circus Maximus (Naxos)
  • Vivaldi: The Four Seasons, Concertos for Double Orchestra - Acoustic Reality Experience
  • Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 3

Jazz/Blues

  • Made in the Shade, by Sara K

Unclassifiable

  • Jienat/Mira by Andreas Fliflet (Jienat)
  • Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed

The 5 studio albums from the Pixies (Come on Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova, and Trompe le Monde) are available on a single blu-ray in the Minotaur boxset.

Yes, but they do not distinguish between those with audio-only and regular A/V Blurays. That raises the issue of what their criteria are. For example, why list "Die Fledermaus" (one of my favorites) and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" but any of dozens of other BR operas and ballets? Not a useful list.

They also do not list Neil Young's "Le Noise" BR or the 2disc "Crossroads" BRs, both with video.............at least, not yet.

Kal, you're right - theyI initially added concert Blurays to the listing; I should delist them and keep audio-only titles.

I'll get around to it some time when I can manage to squeeze in an hour...

Puh-lese; the DVD-A registry is a joke. Search R.E.M.s Monster, by the title Monster. Artist comes up clearly as R.E.M., right? Now search artist by R.E.M.; no match, not even Monster...lol...even though R.E.M. has plenty of other DVD-A titles.

I find it almost completely useless.

Wow, this set belongs in my "hidden ways to get hi-res DVD-A" thread...lol. I absolutely love the Pixies, and didn't know about this set...but I'm not going to pay $200 bucks, when all I want is the 5 DVD-As.

If there's an existing list out there, it seems foolish to duplicate the effort. That said, I tend to frequent AVS, so I'd prefer to have a list here.

I'm thinking we should just keep tabs on the lists and keep them in sync. Thoughts?

You just have to use quotation marks around "R.E.M"

Added, too - thanks for the heads up there were 5 discs in this series. Perhaps the same recordings as the DVD-Audio releases earlier on the Naxos label?

Yup although Naxos also released some in SACD. These were remastered for BR.

I don't want to tread on this list; I know it was clearly laid-out that these were to be audio-only BDs...and not "concert" video BDs. But I for one, would be interested in a supplementary list that was "concert" video BDs that lent themselves to "audio" listening. In other words, a title like Stop Making Sense...which is show only...could be ripped and listened to nicely, audio-only; as opposed to a title like The Last Waltz...which has too much documentary material, and breaks in the show to warrant audio-only listening.

I wonder if titles from artists like Dave Mathews, John Mayer, David Gilmour, etc., lend themselves to audio-only listening? Could we do a list like that in here, or should I go start my own damn thread?...lol

Not sure about the audio-only part, but I do consider my releases to be audio-first HD Audio titles...and they do have video (some even with 3D!).

We have released:
Pachelbel Canon Acoustica - Classical/Jazz
John Gorka - The Gypsy Life - Folk
AIX Records Calibration Disc and HD Sampler - Various
Shostakovich, Debussy & Brockman - Palisades Chamber Music - Classical
Goldberg Variations Acoustica - Classical/Jazz (World's First 3D Music Album)

Coming soon:
Mozart Clarinet Quintet, Horn Quintet and String Quartet K 169 - The Old City String Quartet
AIX 3D Music Album Sampler - Various

All have HD stereo and multiple surround mixes...as well as HD video. We should have Rita Coolidge, Mark Chesnutt, Free Flight, and Bryon Pezzone available by Christmas. Blu-ray is a great format for HD surround music AND HD Video!

Agreed! Thanks for posting about your label. I don't think I'd heard of it prior to this post.

To me the big distinction between audio-only vs. concert or audio + video is whether you get the full audio experience even when the TV is completely off. For example, is there a track list of the packaging so you can see which song is where in the list, and hit the Next button that # of times to get to it? Can you just put the disc in and have it start playing music, or do you have to navigate a front end UI? (Some pure audio discs such as Tom Petty's Live Anthology have this problem. I have to navigate the UI in my head just to get it to start playing.) Is there any speaking by the performers, conductor, etc. that you have to fast forward through to get back to the music?

CDLehner is putting together a list of audio+video Blu-Rays in a separate thread. Perhaps it belongs there?

As I mentioned in the original post, there's definitely a gray area where audio + video discs could make sense for the purposes of this thread. Certainly, having video for those who want it is always a good thing as long as it doesn't impact the controls or other aspects of the audio-only experience.

What does everyone else want to see? Are you interested in combining the lists and just showing the distinctions? Or would you prefer an audio-only list? Any opinions?

This is fine. Let's just make sure that all concert Blu-Rays in the list meet the following criteria:

1. 96/24 quality
2. Little/no non-music segments
3. Standard CD-like controls (skip to next song, etc.) without needing on-screen UI

Would that work?
