A classic 70's prog rock masterpiece. Oh frabjous day!

From Wikipedia:

A new edition of the album is going to be released to coincide with its 40th anniversary, remastered and mixed in 5.1 by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree.

Wow, SW mentioned he loved this album on his DVD Insurgentes. It's great that he's taking this on. I loved this and For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night back in my day.

I don't lurk as much as I used to and I NEVER listen. Comes from being old and cynical.

I never caught this band live. They might have only come through SF once after I was exposed to them. Always regretted it. I certainly wore out those 2 albums.

Pre-ordered the three disk set from amazon.co.uk, since the pre-order for the "import" at Amazon.com is stupidly priced: 11 pounds + 3 pounds shipping = ~US$22 vs US$35.90. Hmm, exchange rate has to fluctuate pretty wildly for that to ever make me order "domestically". Although I suspect the amazon.com price will eventually drop to ~US$25 - they just play safe at first for imports.

And maybe a US domestic release will show up for US$15 or so...

Nice to have confirmation that disc 3 is a DVD with the surround sound mix by Steven Wilson. However, the jury is still out whether this is a DVD-A release (as I fervently hope that it will be, going by previous Steven Wilson productions) or DVD-V (DTS 96/24). Either way, have preordered from UK.

thanks! I'd get it for the surround mix anyhow, even if it's only DTS

By all accounts its Dulby Digital 5.1 and stereo. Not sure why they could not at least add a DTS stream to the 5.1 and LPCM for the stereo.

Received this today. What a missed opportunity not to have provided higher quality audio, especially after Steven Wilson took the trouble to master the main tracks in surround sound! This doesn't bode well for the 40th anniversary Aqualung release either. Will we now have to wait for the 50th anniversary of these classics? Some of us are not getting younger and the audio quality may soon not matter any more.

How so? I don't see how the release of In The Land of Grey and Pink has any bearing on the upcoming Aqualung 5.1 release.

I am pleasantly surprised at how good this surround mix sounds even in DD audio. Steven Wilson has worked his magic here and the result is very good. I can only imagine what it could have been as a DVD-A release.

@Process53, Steven Wilson is also involved with the Aqualung re-mix. But it is the record labels who aren't willing to spend the money to provide better quality audio even when it is available. Perhaps, as with the Pink Floyd SACDs, a specialty label will end up procuring the audiophile masters and produce lossless surround sound releases for the rest of us.... Burning Shed? Hint, hint.

Concur completely on both points. To mix something in 5.1 and not have a high-res release (along with the DD encode for the unwashed masses) seems very silly. The licensing couldn't possibly add more than 50 cents per copy, could it?

I finally got to hear this yesterday and was pleased with the sound quality. Even though it's not hi res, it has a reaonably open, full sound that beats some SACD reissues I've heard, and the mix is great. A must-have for us aging prog rockers!

Got mine today and have to say that even though it is only Dolby it sounds absolutley stunning to me (...granted I love this album already so the surround is gravy to go with the meat). It is a fantastic surround mix, Thank you Steven! And as has been stated what this could been with the proper Hi-Rez treatment...maybe if Blu-Ray audio takes hold this mix will get a Blu release...tho this one sounds so good to me I'm not sure I would bite....Yea right, of course I will...music is my only vice LOL!

Now if Aqualung only turns out this good...Woohoo! But I will keep my fingers crossed for a Hi-Rez inclusion on that one just the same.

Anyone know if there are plans to do any more of their catalog, or was this a one-shot offering? Waterloo and Girls Who Grow would be great to have in surround!
