"Yeah, that record is the subject of discussions with EMI at the moment because we're doing some remixing and remastering in 5.1 Sound, a kind of collector's edition which we'll release this year to celebrate the anniversary of Aqualung," Anderson explains. "And then next year is the 40th anniversary of Thick As A Brick, so we're already looking at the 2012 calendar and beginning to put together tours to regenerate the Thick As A Brick material in live performance for the first time since 1972, in its entirety."

Very cool. It's my understanding that the tour he is doing now, he's performing the whole album of Aqualung.

He had put out a 5.1 version (DTS and DD) of a Carnegie Hall performance which was packaged with a remastered version of Stand Up. It's a fantastic performance, and the 5.1 mixing makes you feel like you're right in the audience. Unfortunately, over at Amazon, a bunch of bozos who don't know how to setup their systems to take advantage of the 5.1 DVD panned it for A: being audio only and B: Not being 5.1.

Hazarding a guess:

Steven Wilson, of Porcupine Tree fame and known for mixing the King Crimson catalog in 5.1, had stated he is mixing into 5.1 a well-known 70's prog rock album (and he noted that although he has mixed Caravan's Land of Pink and Grey that Caravan doesn't quite qualify as well-known 70's Prog Rock, and he was referring to something else).

I wonder if this is SW's 5.1 mix, then?

Curiouser and Curiouser...

shinksma

My opinions are my own, and do not necessarily reflect those of my captors.

My thought exactly. When I heard that Tull was touring and playing Aqualung on its 40th anniversary, I immediately thought that this had to be the prog album that Wilson was mixing. This is fantastic news either way. I hope that Wilson will also consider remixing TaaB and Passion Play - I know that he's already remarked on his interest to hear TaaB in surround sound. Makes my day!

Hmm..the last post (this thread) got my attention. I've intentionally avoided the expense of diving into available 5.1 CDs of stuff that I already own on at least 3 freaking mediums! lol...

Tull's material (if you like them) is awesome. Some of the better produced albums really showcase some great stereo, and with the musicianship of this band, 5.1 should be nothing short of excellent.

I've seen Tull at least 6 (maybe 7) times, and they are one of my favorite live bands of all time. Considering that I've seen bands like Zeppelin twice, Floyd 5 times, The Who twice, etc...that's a pretty strong statement of their entertainment value, at the very least.

Damn it, I just know I'm going to get sucked in again...

Aqualung was done in discrete quadraphonic so there is a 4 ch version laying around.

But if a new 5.1 mix in the works, especially by Wilson, this will make a lot of multichannel music fans very happy. It'd be a must-buy for me

I hope Stand Up is also being considered. My favorite Tull!

I would love to hear Benefit in 5.1. A Passion Play, not so much. But Thick as a Brick... oh yeah!!!

IMHO... the 5.1 mix that is offerred with the remastered Stand Up is worthy for anyone into 5.1 music, and is a Tull fan. Not an aggressive mix, by any stretch of the imagination. But, you wouldn't expect aggressive in a live setting. Reminds me somewhat of the Allman Brothers at Filmore East mix (not the music or the quality of the recording, just the mix). It puts you in the auditorium. The reason this DVD was included with Stand Up, was that a lot of the material from the concert was from the Stand Up album.

I'm just glad that I kept a few of the stubs from my younger days. Again, I saw Tull at least 3 more times..and I think it was 7, total. The Allman Brothers are the only other band that I saw more.

$3.50 to see Foghat--you got ripped off!! I stopped counting Allman Brothers shows I've been to, but it's probably around 30. Good times...

Hey, Foghat was actually a damn good band back in the day. Saw them in 74' and I don't think Slow Ride had even been written yet (god, I hate that song from radio play for 40 freaking years!)

About a dozen for me (Brothers), including the very first Georgia Jam in 74' (Grinder Switch, Wet Willie, Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band and Allman Brothers). I think that one set me back $7 .

Thick as a Brick is an awesome concept piece, but though it got panned heavily by the critics and some fans, most musicians (and I) are in awe of Passion Play. It just takes some time to sink in...kind of like The Incident from PT. Ian Anderson is pretty protective about his property, so I have my doubts about him letting Wilson play with his mixes...sure would like to hear it though.

I don't lurk as much as I used to and I NEVER listen. Comes from being old and cynical.

Second this. It is brilliant, especially the second half that follows the odd fable of the hare and his spekatakels. It would sound fantastic in 5:1! Since IA may have already ceded control to SW for Aqualung, according to rumor, he may be willing to extend this to TaaB and Passon Play. I wonder how many on this forum from NoCal are going to the Aqualung show on June 14?

The Auqualung 5.1 mix is being done by Steve Wilson.

If a movie or concert video or a TV show isn't on blu ray it darn well should be.

Confirmed by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) on Facebook:

Quote:
Since Ian Anderson has been talking about this, I guess it's now official. I recently completed a brand new mix of Jethro Tull's "Aqualung" for a 40th anniversary edition. As always the remix is super faithful to the original, but with much improved sonic clarity (something that just can't be achieved with remastering). Also remixed for inclusion were many other studio tracks from the 1970-71 period (several previously unreleased), and a 5.1 mix. It should be out on EMI in September.

I am so pumped for this. I had the vinyl CD-4 disc back in the 70's when I was into quad. Big plus SW has done this.

Steven Wilson has posted here: http://jethrotull.proboards.com/inde...ad=1518&page=1 and here: http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/sh...&postcount=157 indicating that there will be no high-res 5.1 mix.

I'm very disappointed about that. I sent a comment to EMI Canada and actually got an acknowledgement. If you want a DVD-A (or Blu-Ray) 5.1 mix you might as well let somebody at EMI know. I looked at some of the EMI sites and the Canadian one was the only one I could find that has an obvious Contact Us page. But they are a unit of EMI so I think that's okay. If they get enough of these comments they might take notice. People at QQ Forums and SH Forums are sending in comments too.

Here's the link:

Got some more feedback from EMI Canada. The Director of New Media replied to say that they have started a file; are passing everything along (presumably to EMI); and to keep the comments coming.

You are not going to happy come Sept when you get a Dolby 5.1 Aqualung. Now's your chance to tell them how you feel and maybe get them to change their mind.
