I just saw mention of the Eagles Hotel California 5.1 SACD Hybrid over at the sa-cd.net forum. Right away I went to the CDJapan site and sure enough it looks like Hotel California will be released in August. I'll be preordering this for sure!

Any reason to think that this is using a different master than the previous releases on DVD-A?

it's certainly a lot cheaper than the DVD-A.

Thanks for reminding me. I was trying to remember how much I paid for my Hotel California back in the day. After I pre-ordered an Apex AD-7701 from J&R Music I went into the Cherry Hill New Jesey Tower Records for some software. I came out with a single layer multi-channel SACD of Kind of Blue, Hotel Califormnia on DVD-A and a strange one, a DVD-AUDIO only copy of Night and Day by Willie Nelson. Night and Day is strange because it doen't have a lossy Dolby or DTS track that will play on standard DVD players. The AD-7701 was crappy so Miles and Willie sat on the shelf until I acquired a $99 Pioneer universal in 2009.

Outside of Stereophile I never see any comments on the Willie Nelson disc and it's one of the best sounding surround titles I own.

Cheers

Yes, indeed! 75.00 is the cheapest I've seen lately.

I pre-ordered the SACD today! 43.84 shipped!

Just as an addendum to the above I see that cdJapan will also be releasing Chicago-V; Yes-Fragile; Deep Purple-Machine Head & Linda Ronstadt-What's New all as Hybrid SACD's with 5.1 and stereo audio. Hopefully this is a trend that will allow some of the old oop pop/rock 5.1 mixes to get a new lease on life for some of us that missed them the first time around.

+1 I paid $10 for mine in a bargain bin and it was the disc that led me down the dark path to HD Audio

Wow!!! Thats pretty steep for even Hotel California. I wonder if the buyer realizes that this title will be soon available on SACd for under $40.00.

Maybe he can't play SACD or prefers DVD-A or wants to be able to put the content on a server (not so easily down with SACD).

Very well could be but I do not think many people realize that Hotel California will be released on a 5.1 SACD. I would think once that is common knowledge the prices on the DVD-A will drop but maybe not. I've only owned universal players but are there many players sold that play DVD-A but not SACD?

I seem to recall in the early days of HD audio there were the ones with golden ears who felt that the very sharp high frequency filters required by SACD to remove the noise caused by the very high sampling rate of SACD had an deleterious audible effect on the audio that made this format "inferior". I am not one of those and enjoy both types equally.

As for DVD-A players that cannot play SACD I would say they were few and far between and it's more likely it's players that can play SACD but not DVD-A and Sony had a few of them.

I have never heard that but I definitely do not have golden ears. Even if there was an issue I doubt I would notice it. I feel most of the SACDs I own sound excellent.

I think the best route for MCH music playback is a universal player so that all formats are covered.

But is this 5.1 or just 2CH? If it is only 2CH I would rather pay the additional cost to get the shiny disc with 5.1 capability.

Downloads are 2-channel. Certainly, the big advantage of owning the disc is you "can have it your own way"!

Is there even a standard for MCH downloads? Three formats come to mind
- mulchannel FLAC
- DTS HD
- Dolby TrueHD

But there can't be many players that can play any of those formats. The Popcorn Hour can if the last two are encoded in a .ts stream with no video.

But this thread makes me think I should backup my Hotel California given its perceived value these days.
