I wouldn't be surprised if all future Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree releases will be on Bluray and not DVD-A.

Yet, the 5.1 discs in the boxed-sets are only on DVD-A, which I still think is curious. Certainly there are a small minority of people who want DVD-A, but I'd have thought Bluray would offer far more growth potential.

Well, I suppose evolution is necessary, lol.

I'm wondering what the sales were like for the MP bluray vs. dvda. Perhaps more dvda were sold, hence the format decision for the upcoming releases?

Certainy possible, I've no idea as to the sales numbers. If DVD-A did outsell Bluray, that is further bad news for surround sound as it suggests there is a limted nw audience (but I guess we knew that already). Regardless, I'm in either way.

It's too bad that you can't buy the 5.1 DVD's seperately. You have to buy them with the box set. Oh well.

Hello all I just got the Sector 2 box,
Big Problem, my Oppo 83SE cannot read the DVD Audio of Farewell to kings! I know it is not the disc because it plays on my Onkyo DVD audio player. The good news is that it sounds great!

I have purchased all three today. These dvds and CDs sound amazingly robust with greater dynamics to these ears! Not disappointed at all.

Hello,
What kind of player are you using for the DVD audio discs?

I love the sound of A Farewell to Kings.Xanadu was like a new song in 5.1. So far not a huge impact from Signals which was sad. I used a Dvd Audio player and then a DVD player but I can hardly hear the NASA guys talking during Countdown. Has anyone else noticed this ?

Did you try the DVD-As from the other sector boxes, or just box 2 (also are you HDManiac on SH)? Unfortunatley, I moved on to the OPPO BDP93 so cannot check for you, but I will report any playback issues with that machine - if there are any?

Blu-ray licenses are supposedly very expensive plus the discs themselves are more complicated/pricier to manufacture than dvds, so maybe the music labels think that for such a small group of customers, dvd-a is the better choice financially speaking, along with the mobile issue I mentioned previously.

Sure!

I sure wish the labels who own all those quadraphonic master tapes would pull at least the classic titles from the vaults and sell them in SOME kind of format. The lack of a center channel is no problem for me since that has nothing to do with the *surround* aspect and of course the subwoofer channel can be generatred by the user's own player or receiver if they use a subwoofer.

Hello,
I just purchased Box 2. I read on another forum that a BD 83SE owner downloaded the latest Beta firmware and the disc plays. I have to say from what I heard of the disc on my Onkyo DVD audio player the mix was more enjoyable than the Moving Pic Blue Ray.

I will let you know when I listen to the whole DVD. But I can say that it is a very Deep and wide mix. Guitars are placed well and not overwhelming like they were on Moving pics. Bass is nice and popping, but maybe a bit to much treble as usual, but that is the nature of a Rickenbacker Bass.

Ok,
I downloaded the beta firmware and the DVD Audio disc of AFTK's plays perfectly!
I really like this mix better than the Moving Pics Blue ray. The sound comes from all over and the Moog parts that Geddy play are brought out of the background and really shine out of the sides of the listening area. Geddy's bass really pops on this mix and there are times where it gets very bottomy! I never noticed the amazing bass part at the end of Cinderella Man. Funky stuff with Geddy and Neil. As usual there is a strong presence of Alex's wall of guitar sounds, and at times are a little to wet and overwhelming. Alex's Classical and acoustic parts sound great with a lot of depth. I do think that they could have done a better job with Pearts drums. it seems like the bulk of the kit is mixed out of the left side of the listening area but his toms go across the entire listening area. A little more volume would have helped. So far I am very happy with my purchase.

God. I remember listening to that over and over. Cranking the volume up parallel to the fade out of the song. I wish they would just play the whole thing, however they did it in the studio, and never fade out. That would be fantastic.

Sounds like it suffers from the same weak bass that all the other Rush material has had. Best drummer out there, and he is not showcased. Sad. They are not getting my money this time.

5 albums in hi-rez surround for ~$50?!
Seems like a steal to me.

Only one of the five albums in each set is 5.1. The rest are 2 channel.

Yup. just found the details on that.
How disappointing, to me anyway.
Not a big fan but I really like certain songs.
Seems like Permanent Waves would have been the obvious choice for a 5.1.

I wish they were all MCH too and have held off purchasing to date, though I'm weakening:-)

Given that I just bought the WYWH Immersion set and the Quadrophenia box set, essentially paying more for their 5.1 content than the Rush sets, not sure why I'm holding off.
