So what do you guys think of the Black Sabbath offerings in SHM-SACD, are they better then the standard CD's? I see the following are available:

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Vol. 4
Master of Reality

I all ready own Vol. 4 on standard CD, I have the disc for a long time but do not own a CD copy of the other 2, only cassette eek.gif

The SHM-SACDs are actually not a format but a process of how the discs are made. You could check out sa-cd.net to see how well the Black Sabbath SHM-SACDs are reviewed.

Thanks for the links and clarification of this not being an actual format but a different process for how the discs are made. Since I didn't know Black Sabbath had SACD's I'm just excited to hear about them regardless of the flavor of the SACD disc smile.gif

My pleasure smile.gif. I would really do your homework on the Black Sabbath SHM-SACDs before buying them. For the cost of the SHM-SACDs they can at times not sound much better than a well done CD of a specific title.

Thanks for the tip. Yeah the price is crazy, I can get the normal CD's for as low as $8 but these discs range from just under $60 to almost $70 on amazon.ca. I have also been curious about the Paranoid Deluxe addition for some time and it's cheaper then the SHM-SACD. Initially it was marketed as having a DVD-Audio track but I have seen mixed reports of it simply being a Dolby Digital track, just like Rush's Snakes & Arrows and Dream Theater's Systematic Chaos.

Personally I must admit that the things that the japanese are doing with music is great! I love vinyl but the SHM-SACD as well as the SHM-Platinium are great
Just about everything I've bought has been great but you do have to check what master is being used. Luckily the bands I've invested in all have been remastered for DSD I'm happy with them period!

The Sabbath Paranoid Deluxe is a lossy DTS 5.1

That said I like it for it's multi-channel and it's a much better listen then Dream Theaters Systematic Chaos DTS in surround.

You can get a Sabbath SHM-SACD for $50+or the deluxe for <$20. I'm sticking with the Deluxe edition and holding out hope for a Hi-rez multi-channel down the road.

Cheers,

Dan

I'm in this game primarily for multi-channel, while I do have plenty of two channel SACD / DVD-A's, if I have the option for multi-channel I'll always take it, even in this case where it may be considered an inferior product.

Thanks for posting, much appreciated. I found out recently that the Black Sabbath stuff is available on HDTracks for much less than the SACD's so I might go that route. I don't yet have a digital audio setup but do plan on diving into this in the future. I just curently have no way of getting the files to my SSP as it pre-dates HDMI and USB. I will probably get the Bryston BUC-1 when funds become available.

I also prefer to have surround so I think giving the Deluxe disc a try would probably be worth it seeing as the price is much more reasonable even though it isn't high res.

Where are you finding a SACD version of 13? I can't find any evidence that such a thing exists.

Hey Guys,

it is a hybrid 2-disc set Japan import that I bought as soon as it was released. Should be OOP now. Very limited edition too.

JA,

Which title are you referring to? As far as I know there are no hybrid SHM-SACDs.

Last week, I got in Fairport Convention's Unhalfbricking and the Carpenters' "The Singles: 1969-1973" on SHM-SACD. I wish earlier SHM-SACDs came in this newer, more deluxe packaging. These both sound very, very good- far better than I've ever heard these songs on other formats. They left ample headroom on Unhalfbricking's mastering. Karen's voice sounds excellent on the Carpenters' disc and they use the actual original mixes, not the remixes used on the older SACD. I highly recommend both of them.

Yeah that's all I was able to find.
I'm a noob here as of this posting, so this may be old hat

This is a site that I've found useful lately, particularly when it comes to sorting out new issues. I don't know how everyone is finding their new buys other than reading reviewers' sites on new issues, but I never read any references to these guys here: Discogs.com is great because the way they catalog every 45/LP/CD issue is tremendous. Just like this link to Sabbath's "13", you can see every pressing version in the world. And of particular note - whether a disc is is a remaster or just a reissue. This should help make everyone's purchasing a little less hit-or-miss, especially when it comes to shelling out big for pricey SHMCDs/SACDs. Now what masters are being used for the RMs are anyone's guess. I can't really say how dependable the listings are, as I've found discrepancies a few times, but it's a great place to start.

I have to admit, though, that I peruse the PB for FLAC copies to see if there is any discernable SQ difference in the new SHMCD/SACDs vs my own CD and make my decision to purchase (or not) on that. I find that it makes the disappointments fewer and the wallet a little less lighter

I decided to buy some SHM SACDs. I found the question of sound quality mixed. The first one was Steely Dan Aja. I found it only sounded marginally better than the standard issue CD. I also bought Black Sabbath's self titled release and Paranoid. Black Sabbath I felt had excellent sound quality, eventhough the standard CD I felt sounded pretty good considering it was recorded in 1970. Paranoid doesn't sound nearly as good. It was marginally better than the standard CD. I also have the Deluxe release. Its CD does sound somewhat better than the standard CD. The DVD as mentioned previously is in DTS. The surround mix is the quadraphonic 1973 version. This in my opinion sounds terrible. It sounds as though they took a dirty vinyl record and transferred it to DVD. I think it is actually 4.0. However there is a stereo 2.0 DTS mix on the DVD that sounds atleast as good as the SHM SACD. I haven't listened to either in quite a while though. This one is probably not worth the price. I also bought Who's Next but wasn't really impressed with the sound quality of it. The best sounding SHM SACD that I have is Asia's self titled album. This one sounds better than a standard CD by leaps and bounds. If you like this album, it is definitely worth the price.

Just a note if this is your first go around with SHM-SACDs. You may not want to give up hope for any you're finding not quite up to par on the first listen. There is a theory out there that SHM-SACDs improve after multiple playings. I own 2, the Black Sabbath self titled you have, and The Carpenters. I did like the Sabbath one out of the box, but I've found the Carpenters one to be better after several spins. I have no clue as to the "science" behind this, if there is any. If you Google this, you'll find many people coming to similar conclusions. YMMV, of course. One other note for SHM-SACDs, they are all in stereo only, no multi channels.

Just thought I'd check CD Japan for the Supertramp COTC SHM-SACD they've bumped several times starting last winter, since they still have my money. It's showing a Nov.1/2014 release date now. Should I get excited or are they playing with my emotions again?

Any idea if the Black Sabbath offerings have been discontinued? I have 3 discs on order from Amazon.ca, Master of Reality, Paranoid and Vol. 4 spanning from June until just a few weeks ago and still no estimated shipping date on any of them. I also want the original album plus Heaven and Hell but if they are no longer being offered then there isn't much point in adding the other 2.

If I had to guess I'd say playing with your emotions and wallet. I'll believe it when I see it.

I hope the COTC SHM-SACD is released in November. But I'm not overly hopeful that it will be. Did you use Paypal for your preorder? I used to use Paypal when placing preorders with cdjapan. But I switched to using a credit card due to payments being charged right away when using Paypal. When using a credit card the payment is not charged till the order is shipped.

My SACD collection, watch it grow and my wallet shrink ;-).

Denon 4311 (in preamp mode), Parasound 2100, Boston Acoustics A7200 amp, Oppo BDP-103, Consonance CD120, Panasonic TC-P60GT50 plasma, Panamax 5100EX, Salk Song Towers, Song Center, ADS 300C (surrounds) and two Rythmik F12SEs.

I still use a card at Amazon, etc but thought I'd try PP. I've only used it a couple times but do see times like this as a disadvantage.

I also want the original album plus Heaven and Hell but if they are no longer being offered then there isn't much point in adding the other 2.
Try Accoustic Sounds. The last time I checked they had all the Black Sabbath titles in stock.

Thanks, I took a look and there is one there. I actually just took the link to cdjapan to check them out at the source and they are all unfortunately listed as out of print Seems I missed the opportunity. I think what I'll do now is just get them as digital downloads. They all are being offered in 96/24.
