Press Release - 'THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS 1972-1982 - Wed 25th Jan

?ROXY MUSIC DEBUT 40TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR

WITH 'THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS 1972-1982

RELEASED 2 APRIL

Roxy Music will release a deluxe box-set entitled 'Roxy Music: The Complete Studio Recordings 1972-1982' on Monday 2 April, celebrating 40 years since the release of the band's eponymous debut album in 1972. The release is the first of a major reissue campaign with Virgin Records.?

'Roxy Music: The Complete Studio Recordings 1972-1982', an 8 CD + 4 DVD deluxe box set will feature all eight Roxy Music studio albums - Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure, Stranded, Country Life, Siren, Manifesto, Flesh And Blood, Avalon. In addition, a selection of non-album singles, B-sides and remixes, some of which are available on CD for the first time ever will also be included. Each album will be represented on DVD format as high-resolution audio transferred digitally from the original analogue masters being transferred to digital audio, making this release an absolute 'must have' for Roxy Music fans and collectors. ??

Roxy Music - Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno, Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera, Paul Thompson and Graham Simpson - landed in 1971, seemingly from far beyond Planet Earth, to part bewilderment part rapture.... an intoxicating cocktail of fashion, romance, nostalgia and futurism with songs that were almost cinematic, set to soundscapes that stunned and perplexed.??

Roxy Music's debut album, the self titled Roxy Music, was released in 1972 to critical acclaim and exemplified the band's penchant for glamour, both in the lyrics and with the album cover of model Kari-Ann Muller, kickstarting a tradition of iconic album covers featuring female models. Single 'Virginia Plain' - not featured on the original album release - reached No.4 in the UK singles chart. For Your Pleasure, released the following March and including the classic Roxy tracks 'Do The Strand', 'In Every Dream A Heartache' and 'Editions Of You', was the last album to feature Brian Eno in the recording line up, and displayed a more elaborate production treatment with a variety of fade ins / outs and tape loops. Non-album single 'Pyjamarama' is included on 'The Complete Studio Recordings', as the original Island label remix and a 1977 remix, plus its B-Side 'The Pride and the Pain'. ??

November 1973 saw the release of Stranded, which reached No. 1 in the UK Album Chart, producing the Top Ten single 'Street Life',and featuring 1973 Playmate of the Year (and Bryan Ferry's then girlfriend) Marilyn Cole on the cover. A year later, Roxy Music released Country Life, this time featuring two models on the album cover (Constanze Karoli and Eveline Grunwald) and producing the single 'All I Want Is You'.

Siren, released in 1975 and featuring Jerry Hall as the cover girl, includes arguably Roxy Music's best-known song 'Love Is The Drug', which charted at No. 2 upon release, and a second single 'Both Ends Burning'. A four year gap preceded the release of Manifesto in March 1979, which reached No. 7 in the UK charts and featured an eye catching album cover of mannequins conceptualised by Bryan Ferry and long time designer and Roxy Music collaborator Antony Price, this time producing three singles including the No. 2 hit 'Dance Away' and 'Angel Eyes'. ??

The No. 1 album Flesh And Blood was released in 1980, Roxy Music at this point was Ferry, Mackay and Manzanera due to the departure of drummer Thompson. Roxy Music's cover of the John Lennon song 'Jealous Guy', was released as a single in 1981 and included the B-Side 'To Turn You On'. The most commercially successful Roxy Music album, Avalon, was released in 1982, charting at No. 1, and staying in the UK album charts for over a year, with three single releases including the Top 5 song 'More Than This'. ??

'Roxy Music: The Complete Studio Recordings 1972-1982' brings together all of Roxy Music's albums with a plethora of tracks previously never released before on CD, including the USA 7" mixes of 'Do The Strand' 'Love Is The Drug' and 'Take A Chance With Me', two edits of Country Life opening track 'The Thrill Of It All', plus its B-Side 'Your Application's Failed' (the only track to date written by Thompson), 7" and the 7" single versions of 'Oh Yeah' (from Flesh And Blood) and 'Avalon'. ?

Further reissues are planned for 2012 with details to be announced at a later date.

This is the key question to be answered for me.

From what I read in this thread (page 5 post #96) on the Steve Hoffman forum they will be DADs (Digital Audio Disc). They will 24/96 DADs (stereo-only) with no MCH audio.

I'm guessing credit for this set rests with Bryan Ferry.
Too bad it's not native 5.1 but DLPIIx can do nice things with 2 channel.
Decently priced as well. Hoping the packaging does justice to the originals.

Fast, I wouldn't count on this set being around in 6 months except from resellers if recent history on these types of sets holds true.

I'm getting really tired of these threads that have nothing to do with surround sound, which is why I come here less and less.

It appears that the ship has sailed as far as 5.1 remixes are concerned. I guess I am not offended since I paid list for Bryan Ferry's Boys and Girls and $60 for Roxy Music Avalon. The interesting thing here is the return to the blink if you missed em at the dawn of DVD 96/24 DVD or DAD or whatever ya wanna call em discs.

I think that it's interesting that they chose to include this format. 96/24 pcm has the potential to sound pretty good. I was in retail untill 2001 and I remember how good some of the early two channel 96/24 titles from Chesky Records sounded. A standout was Dirt Floor from the late Chris Whitley. I am not so sure how to feel about "flat transfers." Mr. Hoffman commented that while the flat transfer $60 Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers SHM-SACD should not have to be re-equalized by the buyer thus losing the SACD resolution.

In closing I like the idea of a high quality disc that is almost universal in it's playback ability. The only outstanding questions for me are how do they sound compared to my early West German Polygram issues and can the 96/24 be EASILY ripped to iTunes?

Roxy music studio albumn sounded pretty decent. Im excited to see a hi Rez set being released. In 2004 I had an opportunity to really gobble up so many sacd that are oop today that I kick myself. Avalon, being one of them. I look forward to this box set nonetheless.

Yeah, I know. That's the problem. The more you keep buying this stuff in stereo, the less likely we are to get any new MCH releases. I'm a huge Roxy Music fan and would have paid anything for this in MCH. Not interested in new releases (or re-releases) in stereo.

Well from my point of view, I doubt if the market for SACD's (stereo or MCH) is large enough to influence the publishers one way or the other.

But I do agree that I would not buy a SACD if it were only stereo. I find the enhanced sound field from a properly mixed MCH title much more satisfying that just the additional AQ from a SACD over a CD.

I think I have only ever purchased two SACD's that were stereo and it was inadvertent when I didn't know such beasts exist. They are BS&T and Charlotte Church, neither title which I play much.

I understand your thoughts and that is definitely your choice to buy only MCH SACDs. I agree to a certain extent as recently I have bought several 2CH SACDs that in my opinion do not sound that great. But I have also bought many 2CH SACDs that are a nice improvement in SQ (clarity, depth and soundstage) over the RBCDs of the same title. Due to buying the SACDs that did not impress me from a SQ standpoint I am not buying SACDs at the pace I was. I now research a title I am interested in and then decide if the RBCD might be the best choice over the more expensive SACD version.

I think that if SACD buyers as a whole stopped buying 2CH SACDs thinking that will force music companies to produce more MCH SACDs is not a very good idea IMO. If people stop buying 2CH SACDs I feel the same music companies will just stop making all SACDs. As it is now the vast majority of SACDs sold are 2CH not MCH. Now if the sales of 2CH SACDs continue to increase I feel music companies will see this and release more MCH SACDs if and when possible. In other words music companies will see there is a market for the SACD format and will want to cash in on that demand. Whether that happens is anyones guess but to stop buying 2CH SACDs will not help the future of the SACD format in the least again IMO.

Just to get back OT. I bought Avalon on CD back in 1984 I think (!). I was quite impressed with the SQ over the LP but hadn't played it in years.

When I got the SACD and spun that up, I was astounded at the AQ. It was like listening to a new title completely. Of course part of that was due to the multi channel format (not simulated surround) but also the increased AQ of SACD over Red Book audio.

Now Avalon is one of their later albums and perhaps their earlier ones don't have the same multi-channel masters available but it seems a shame to go to all that effort to remaster them for SACD and not do MCH at the same time unless there was a cost element.

Presumably for stereo release they are going back to the original 2 track masters (before any EQ required for LP release one would hope!) created from the mixdown from the multi channel recordings, perhaps digitially enhancing them where appropriate and releasing them.

For a MCH release they would have to go back to the original 16/24 (whatever) studio masters and create a new mix completely. That is obviously a lot more expensive and would require a significant investment in time from the artists. But it does seems like an opportunity missed IMHO.

Would that additional effort be worth it commerically? It's hard to tell.

Who are the audience for these new titles? It is those of us who knew Roxy Music in our youth and now have the funds and equipment to enjoy the music in its most pristine form and therefore would dearly love MCH releases, or is it the iPod brigade who are quite happy with heavily compressed MP3/AAC audio, are likely not to even know the band and are unlikely to be the target audience.

I think it's the former lot of us who care about the band and AQ and would double dip the music which makes the exercise even more frustrating.

I bought the CD years ago and was always impressed with the SQ. The new remastered HDCD sounds excellent as well. I agree that the MCH mix of the SACD takes Avalon to the next level and beyond. I just listened to the SACD yesterday and enjoyed it as I always do.

Unless one is privy to inside information on the Roxy Music box set it is anyones guess as to why MCH mixes of each album are not included. My guess would be that it was about the money. It could also be that the masters for these albums are not suited for MCH as Avalon was.

Well it could also be fans of Roxy Music that care about SQ and will be glad to have 2Ch Hi-Rez than no Hi-Rez at all. Of course I would like all the titles to be MCH Hi-Rez but the way it looks that will not be happening.

I would love it if this box set was in MCH Hi Res, but will still buy it in only 2CH Hi Res.
The price of $99.00 for 8 Hi Res CD's isn't to bad, IMO.
My Amazon pre-order has already been placed.

Just checked the Amazon site and it's now saying that this is currently unavailable and may not be back in stock. Called Amazon about my order and they can't find any info on this at all. I have a feeling they never received any of these period. My estimated delivery date was April 12 and that's definitely not going to happen. Anybody have any more info on this at all?

Jeffrey,

Word is the box set will be delayed with a release possibly in June or July of this year. Here is a link to vivaroxymusc.com where under latest news (4/3/12) it mentions the delay.

I knew a delay would happen. The funny thing, Amazon was the last to ship the Pink Floyd wywh sacd as well. 2 months isn't to bad for this box set.

Saw them in '72! They warmed up for Jo Jo Gunn and The Edgar Winter Group! They were awesome to say the least!

then there is no particular reason to want this box set. I have for you pleasure and a couple of others that I want and they are already HDCD, so I see no point.
