Some of Billy Joel's long out of print SACD's (such as THE STRANGER and 52ND STREET that sell for $100+ on Amazon) have recently been re-issued by Mobile Fidelity. Anyone here gotten hold of these and care to comment on the sound quality versus the out of print Sony versions?

Thanks!

The older versions of The Stranger and 52nd Street are multichannel, as opposed to the newer 2-channel MoFi releases.

Bob,

Here is a link to a thread over at the Steve Hoffman forum where the Stranger MOFI SACD is being discussed.

For now, only "52nd Street" and "The Stranger" have been re-released by Mobile Fidelity.

If you don't have the original Sony SACD versions, I'd say definitely pick up the MoFi SACDs . There are definitely some sonic improvements on the MoFi versions over the Sony versions, in particular the smoothness of the sound quality. However, if you do have these titles on Sony SACDs, then it becomes an issue how big of Billy Joel fan you are.

Btw, the original Sony SACDs do have a 2 channel hi-rez mix as well.

Not quite only those two. Piano Man, Turnstiles, and Glass Houses have been also released on SACD by MFSL. Sorry to hear they're stereo, though. I figure those 5.1 channel Sony versions are so expensive on the secondary market now for a reason, and I suspect that reason is 5.1 channel goodness.

Thanks so much!! Did not know they existed...they are not in my wish list. Mobile Fidelity uses UltraGain II, correct? And I assume they are gold? I'm unsure if it's proper to ask questions in a response. But I do have one...I listened to "Imagine", the latest remastered CD version, and then listened to the MoFi CD. It sounded...warmer? Just wondering how gold affects a digital signal, if someone knows. One last one...do I go through MoFi to purchase these? Where would the be my best bet $$ wise?

I ordered mine (and preordered The Nylon Curtain) from Amazon, and preordered Songs in the Attic and An Innocent Man from Acoustic Sounds.

Hybrid SACDs, no matter which label they're from, are always light gold in color on the play side of the disc.

I got my Mobile Fidelity SACDs from Amazon.com. They are often several dollars cheaper than MSRP and I get free shipping.
