To all I was able to find a solution for the 5.1 surround issue with cablevision. I had the same no luck with contacting cablevision so I looked for another to get my system to do what I wanted. I searched on amazon found that there are multiple devices that would convert or split the audio signal off of the hdmi cable. JTech makes a device (hdmi to hdmi +spdif and rca) audio converter. I got it and it works. my setup is cable box and roku to ports 1 and 2 on the hdmi switch. then out from hdmi to the j-tech converter which splits to hdmi video and one optical cable to my a/v receiver. the device will do pass through, stereo and 5.1 dd and ddpl and ddplII. there are also hdmi 4 and 5 port switches with built in optical out coax out and stereo out. just know that there are other option out there rather than trying to get cablevision to listen to the people making them rich.

News flash: sometime Friday night the long awaited changeover in the menu occurred. There are now 3 options for sound and the Dolby Digital signal can now be passed through to my 5.1 system while keeping the HDMI video signal to the TV. There was no email saying there would be a reboot needed, it just appeared when I did my periodic check on Saturday (and it works!). Next issue, the low end video signal they send out.
