Has anyone auditioned any surround headphone setups? I've read about a couple...a Smyth research simulation that uses existing Stax phones and costs 3K....and there is a BluWavs system due out soon that looks intriguing altho I cannot find any detailed specs on it...

You can use any headphones you want/have, they just have an optional Stax's included bundle. Here is a a video podcast of Home Theater Geeks with VP of Smyth Lorr Kramer.

The system is actually a lot more (different) than just surround sound. It is designed to sample a room/speaker setup and reproduce the sound (speaker timbre/room characteristics/number of channels) in your headphones.

Interesting...I will have to watch the link. But I certainly would not want to duplicate the sound of my room setup! I look to headphones to escape its shortcomings!

It's not necessarily about duplicating your room but someones fantastic room with great speakers or a recording studio or symphony hall. Places/speakers that you can't have or afford.wink.gif It has multiple memories so you could have a large hall for a live rock recording and a nice small room with Wilson Alexander XLF 2's for jazz.

The Blu WAVS setup apparently has 10 discrete drivers, one of which is a transducer to mimic vibration of a sub. So it is discrete surround rather than a simulation. If anyone auditioned them at a trade show, please chime in here!

So the BluWavs surround cans are apparently delayed until at least March....did anyone see if they were at CES? The website doesn't give much detail...it would be interesting to know things like types of drivers, where is the transducer mounted, what kind of DAC is used in the version with HDMI hookup, etc., etc. Anyone know???

Let your main system do the surround sound and your cans for other purposes. I'd think money would be better spent just getting a decent pair of headphones such as HiFiman HE400, BeyerDynamic DT880, Senhiessmer HD600/650 for instance.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.
