What hardware could I use to achieve this? I have an old Denon 1804 receiver that has optical in and analog rec out but I suspect it would down mix the 5.1 signal... the manual is unclear.

One possibility is that the AVR has A & B front speakers. Could I connect the B speakers to a speaker to line level converter? Does such a device exist that would not compromise the sound quality?

If your player and receiver support 5.1 analog, you could have the player do the decoding and only attach cables the L/R channels.
