I have a Sony S570 used mainly for playing CD but I do have a few SACD. The CD contacts Gracenote for album information but the SACD does not. This is strange but normal for the S570. I would like to upgrade the Blu-ray player, but are there any that display all the information of a regular CD when playing a SACD?

What best player only for DVD-Audio? The main thing - the quiet reading discs. I can listen to at night. May be Classe Audio CDP502?

Hard to argue with Oppo. I replaced my aging BDP-83 with the 105 this weekend. Direct to an Emotiva UPA-7 amp.

Oh my gosh...

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Wow! It's ben a year since I started this thread and my Denon DVD-3910 (that stopped playing SACDs) still plays DVD-As flawlessly and I love the fact that the $110 Sony BDP-S5100 Blu ray player works GREAT with SACDs...That said, I am still looking for a cost effective/comparable Blu ray player that plays DVD-As when the Denon finally bites the dust. Anyone?

Wow! Are there really no inexpensive Blu ray players that can play DVD-Audio?

I haven't seen a combo player that plays all three, blu,SACD DVD-A, for under a 100 but I really have not been actively looking for one either. Check out the blu ray player thread as well if you haven't already. When I was looking a few Pioneer models would show up at Best Buy in their open box area.

Thanks. I really am looking only for a Blu ray player that decodes DVD-A and it doesn't need to be under a hundred dollars but I've been real impressed with my Sony that was near that price and is an excellent SACD player that happens to play Blu rays.

I have that Sony model too and have been pretty impressed with SACD play. Good luck with your search.

If it's still available, the most cost effective combo player I've seen is the Pioneer BDP-450... But it's way over $100.00

Thanks but I'm no longer looking I ended up with an Oppo. As for the OP he only needs a blu ray that does DVD A, not all 3.

I'd be surprised if there were any players being made new today other than Oppo that decode DVD-Audio. And if they are, they're likely close to if not more expensive than an Oppo player.

Thanks. I understand the Oppo is a good player but I really am disappointed that no one is making a Blu ray player that decodes DVD-A as well as the Sony does SACDs. Heck, I'd pay 3 times the cost for it but 5 times doesn't seem prudent to me.

Although it's sad that new disc players are excluding support for DVD-A playback it's not all that surprising when you consider the disc format is (bar the shouting) - dead

Annoyingly, Sony's money machine has managed to win both the high-def video (Blu-ray) and audio (SACD) disc formats war That said... Personally I do actually prefer SACD...

There are players that do decode DVD A as well as the Sony does SACD, it's just that they also decode SACD. There doesn't seem to be a blu ray player that just does blu and DVD A. The Pioneer model if still available was cheaper than the Oppo. If anything goes wrong with your Sony you have a backup.

Denon BDP-1611UD was $250 2 years ago. Still going strong
and plays everything, including homemade discs.
Only stereo analog outs, though -- HDMI and coax for everything else.

Thanks but to be clear I'm not looking for anything. Zen Traveler, the op in this case, is looking specifically for a blu ray player that does DVD A, and nothing else just blu ray and DVD A. Do you know of any that do just those two things?

OK -- I didn't realize that the absence of features would be a plus.
The Denon BDP-1611UD is a great BluRay 3D player with DVD-A for not a lot of money.
The DVD-A section handles up to 32 bits at 192 kB, which is still state of the art plus some.
It is extremely lightweight, owing to a cheap transport and the absence of multiple analog outs.
It has to be unplugged once in a while when it freezes during shutdown (never in play, though).
It doesn't have WiFi, but can be wired by ethernet or updated with a USB stick.
I have never updated it because I'm afraid they will remove features or otherwise muck around.
You didn't say if you needed analog outputs for the multi-channel capability.
That is where the big bucks come into play. DVD-A players are audiophile and priced accordingly...

Wait--I don't mind that it would play SACDs and would definitely rather have a universal player, but I was hoping to find one in the less than (or even close) to the $200 price range given the Sony has been excellent so far at half that price but only plays SACDS along with Blu ray--Right now my DVD-3910 is still going strong with DVD-As (no longer plays SACDs) but when it finally quits that is the format that I need a player for.

Thanks for this recommendation and will look into it because that is the cheapest price I've seen for a universal play--I don't need any thing else except HDMI and no longer use analog connections. Fwiw, I am fond of Denon products but didn't realize the lower end played all of those formats.

{EDIT: Okay--That appears to be a discontinued product and didn't seen anywhere selling them for $250, in fact they were asking over $300 used on Amazon and that is definitely more than I want to spend on a used player.}

I was pleasantly surprised to find such a rare bargain as well!
Here is a link to a discussion thread about it and a similar other Denon model:

I guess that ship has sailed. I got mine for $250 a couple of years ago from an online seller.
They might have a new model and you would have to hunt for the best price -- good luck!...

Here's a Denon factory-refurb universal player w/ full 1 yr manufacturer warranty for only $50 more...

Here's a factory-refurb Mrantz for $100 more, w/ full 1 yr warranty.

I've heard good things about this site- factory authorized for everything they sell; though I've never personally used it.

But if interested, move fast; they can disappear quickly.

That Denon looks a lot like mine -- must be the successor model, with WiFi capability.
I'm pretty sure I got mine so cheap because it was a closeout model...

I have an OPPO BD-95 and am very pleased. It's my only source for audio and video. I listen to DVD-A and SACD regularly. Works well with burned media too.

Thanks ,but the discontinued BD-95 does look to be a good unit but it's MSRP is over my budget and tremendously overpriced in the used market--.Fwiw, I will be using the HDMI connection.
