I must admit I was very surprised when I saw that the new Sony UHP-H1 supports all the current audio disc formats.

And at a competitive price too

Oppo has 2 USB ports, and plays back MKV video [big deal for me], Sony has LDAC bluetooth support. Neither support H265 video yet.

That's true. I would wait and save for the Oppo 103 before buying the Sony UHP-H1. Sony will never get any of my money for any of their disc players. Their service is horrible and anyone thinking of buying their players should be made aware of that. Just do a quick search and one will find horror stories from owners of older Sony players that were sent to their distant service centers. No thanks! I'll spend the additional money and get outstanding service when and if needed from Oppo. The old adage "you get what you pay for" rings true here IMO .

Hi Bill,

I'd also recommend that the original poster (or anybody else for that matter) buy an Oppo

And I'm right there with you when it comes to purchasing Sony products - It's a big no-no from me!

But given this topic is over two and a half years old, it would seem the OP is in no rush to purchase anything

Seriously--I have no use to until my Denon stops playing DVD-As and surely thought it would've in the last 2 1/2 years since I started this thread.

That said, I paid $110 that same 2 1/2 years ago to play SACD's and venture into Blu ray with the Sony S-5100 and it's also still going strong so I don't need a player yet...

Again, the stumbling block is for DVD-Audio and I don't wish to shell out $500 and it seems like others are going to be in the same boat is why I resurrected this thread.

As with any spinney disc player "you pays your money and you takes your choice", in this case, currently $350.00.

Of-course, it might come down in price. But then again, it might disappear altogether

Used Oppo BD players range from $200-350. And they are still fully supported by Oppo.

Before I paid that for a used machine I'd call Oppo and ask for a refurb unit, which they have from time to time. They usually run ~$440.

I agree. But the refurbished 103s when available are $415. If out of stock always give Oppo a call to double check. There were no refurbished 105Ds on the Oppo site but when I called there was one available. The refurbished 105D I bought looked as if it was brand new and was never out of the box. All refurbished units come with the full two year warranty.

@Bill Mac,
I see that you have America on SACD. I imagine the is quite impressive. Is that stereo only for the hybrid SACD?
Nice collection by the way!

Russ,

Thanks, it's an expensive labor of love which any SACD collector knows . The America S/T AF SACD is stereo only. Hearts is 4.0 and Homecoming is 5.1 surround. All the America SACDs sound excellent but the two surround mixes are a real nice addition .

At the price, you can usually buy a Sony player, use it and throw it away when it breaks and still be able to buy two more Sony players before meeting the price of the Oppo. I have an Oppo myself, but if it wasn't for features that I wanted that weren't available on Sony (MKV playback, Darbee, etc) I would have totally bought a Sony and would be perfectly happy with it. I have a seven year old Sony player in my bedroom that is still going strong.

But other than the recently released Sony UHP-H1 no other Sony player has had DVD-A playback. I'd rather spend the money for a top quality player that does everything I need than playing the disposable player game. I bought a number of Sony DVD, SACD and CD players over the years. Some were fairly expensive inline with Oppo pricing of today. None of those Sony players ever made it past 3-5 years. They all failed in some way or the other long before they should have.

Bill Mac,
Quite the library you have. I really like the SRV Texas Hurricane! I bet it is amazing. I put it in my cart in Amazon, now my mind just keeps going back to it. I am going to purchase Hearts today. Thanks for the info. I do have a few two channel with some of the Doobie Brothers SACDs, and really enjoy them as well.

Why is that? Don't almost all blu-ray players play DVD-A? They usually have both DTS and Dolby sound, so I would think anything that plays DTS or Dolby and DVDs would play DVD-A.

I'm assuming you're asking why the UHP-H1 is the first player from Sony to offer DVD-A playback. The reason is Sony is all about SACD (or was) and never considered offering DVD-A playback until the UHP-1. No not all Blu-ray players will play DVD-As. They'll play the lossy DTS and Dolby audio from the DVD-V layer but will not play the hi-res audio from the DVD-A layer. So if you want to play the hi-res audio from DVD-A discs you'll have to get a player that offers DVD-A playback. That would most likely mean buying a universal player from companies like Cambridge Audio, Denon, Marantz, Oppo or Pioneer.

Ah. That explains why that particular problem has never registered on my radar. I don't care about SACD or DVD-A for "hirez sound". I'm only interested in multichannel playback. It all sounds the same as long as the lossy is high enough bitrate, which I'm sure the lossy tracks on a DVD-A are.

Not necessarily 4K, simply a better spinner with upgraded parts as only an ES edition can provide.

Well, they better make it in yellow. It's going to be a lemon. If they have any hopes of dealing with Oppo in that segment of the market, 4k is a necessity.

Played a few scenes from the Jurassic Park Lost World Blu ray we say last night on the S5100 and want to explore the differences (if any) later. That said, it was GREAT being able to play Speaking in Tongues (DVD-A/Dual Disk} by Talking Heads and Dire Straights Brother in Arms (Sacd), along with Pink Floyd's Endless River again on one player.
After owning the Sony UHP-H1 for 3 months we are still happy.

The ES version is Sony's first UHD-BD player, the X1000ES. UHDBD playback is the only real difference between the two and they are otherwise, nearly identical in parts.

I can't figure out Sony these days, actually for a long time now. Every category they used to dominate in home entertainment is lost to them, took over by Korean and Chinese brands now . And yes much of it is their fault [Sony].
