Hi all,

Just saw an advance review of the new self-titled Dream Theater album that's coming out in 2 weeks. The review's from an overseas Fan Club (Norway). I was aware that the special edition of the new disk would have 2 disks (CD + DVD). However, in reading this newly published review, I noted that the reviewer specifically mentions that the mix is also available in DVD-A format. No listing/additional information available to confirm this on Amazon so take this as pure speculation so far. However, DT did release a 5.1 version of Systematic Chaos so perhaps they're again re-embracing surround with 5.1 and DVD-A ????

Review below from dtnorway.com

5.1 mix: The 5.1 mix is better in the sense of dynamics, much because a lot of the ambience that fills the song is moved around to the back channels. Vocals are also much more clearly placed in the center and is therefore a lot more audible. This isn’t a terribly active 5.1 mix, for the most part guitars, bass and drums are firmly situated in the front, with echos and reverb being placed in the back. Vocals are mostly center, except for some of the backing vocals (such as the callback of «enemy inside» in that song which is placed in the left back speaker). Keyboards and effects are much more fully surround though, with pads and organs covering the entire room, and effects jumping from speaker to speaker around the room. The totality of it is that this mix gives much more breathing space for the instruments, as much of that which causes the «wall of sound» effect is absent in the 5.1 mix since it’s more evenly distributed from different speakers. It also seems to be a mix more dynamic mix – if I switch to the 2ch mix that’s also available on the DVD, it’s much louder. I very much prefer this version of the mix. The 5.1 mix is available in DVD-Audio format as well as a 48khz 448bitrate Dolby Digital 5.1 mix for those that do not have a DVD-Audio compatible player.

Amazon has it at $15.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DJ80VLS/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p15_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=113CQXCCBQ1YMJ0D18M8&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1389517282&pf_rd_i=507846

CDJapan has one that says CD+DVD for $25.34

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=NEOIMP-7308

and another that says CD-DVD-Audio (Limited Edition) for $32.66

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=WPZR-30479

I guess I'd just like to know for sure before ordering that the Deluxe Edition at RoadRunner Records and Amazon contains a DVD-Audio...

Although I truly due hope it is a 5.1 DVD-A disc, deep down I don't think it will be because Systematic Chaos was simply 5.1 Dolby Digital however the sentence highlighted in bold above certainly suggests a true DVD-A disc. Although the 5.1 Dolby mix was cool on Systematic Chaos it's no substitute for DVD-A, Blu-ray Audio or SACD. Dream Theater's music should always come as high res stereo and 5.1 in my opinion smile.gif

I have already pre-ordered the deluxe version but with my Denon DVD-A1 no longer capable of playing DVD-A (along with SACD, a lot of CD's and standard DVD's) I unfortunately will not be able to enjoy the high res audio if it's there frown.gif

Unless the package states it I unfortunately will not be able to tell. I can almost guarantee my player will not load the disc. If it was a Blu-ray audio disc I would be fine but currently no DVD-A discs will load. I even tried popping in systematic chaos this afternoon but no luck there either, all I get is a "no disc" message.

Hi!

I wrote the review referenced above. I saw this forum in the referers list to my review, so I just wanted to check in and give you some details here.

Here's a picture of the disc itself:
.
Notice the "DVD Audio" logo.

And here's a screenshot of the contents of the disc:

This is the two-disc version (Deluxe edition). As you can see, it contains both a VIDEO_TS folder (which is the Dolby Digital 5.1 version of the DVD, and which'll play just fine on a regular dvd/blu-ray player), and an AUDIO_TS folder, which is the DVD-Audio version (I don't know which bitrate or samplerate, but i assume 96kHz at 24bits in 5.1 channels).

Yes, as long as it's the version containing both a CD and a DVD, it will be the DVD-Audio version.

Gotcha, thanks man. Loving what I'm hearing on the free stream (even though the sound quality is crap of course) so I'm really looking forward to this one.

I've got this one pre-ordered as well from Amazon.

Since I was at it I also got 2011's Arch / Mateos 'Sympathetic Resonance', basically Fates Warning with the original John Arch. Not sure how I've missed this before. CD of course.

I got my copy from Amazon, and it is DVD-Audio 5.1 24/96 but it is defective or my Oppo 103 has issues with it. The sound collapses into a distorted mess after a minute or so, and crashes the player as it won't immediately responds to commands like stop or eject. It also has no video at all, no menu, it just start to play in MCH. That sounds good for those don't wanna turn on their monitor to select tracks and audio options, but it also might be a culprit as to why things go bad.
However it's too early to speculate at this point. I will dust off my other Oppo, that plays DVD-As and I also have an ancient Panasonic DVD-A player as well. We'll report back.

Update: the Oppo 980 plays it just fine, so it seems that the Oppo 103 might have issues with this title after all. I've used the same input and HDMI cable and the 103 has the latest FW as far as I know, the 980 hasn't been updated for years, nor was it in use for months. I had to go out into my garage do get it. I'll post my impression of the album and SQ of the MCH mix after I had a proper listen.

Thanks for the Update. Guess Oppo will need to update the firmware yet again on the 103 (which I also have).

Will have to power up the old Denon 2930 to hear this album (should be in the mail today)

First of all the DVD-A played just fine on my Oppo 83.

I canceled my pre-order with amazon and actually picked this item up in a big box store (Best Buy). It's been a long time since I've been able to buy any hi-rez music that way.

For whatever reason I was kind of expecting a pretty uninspiring surround mix with mostly reverb for the surrounds. The first 30 seconds of the album told me I was going to be in for a treat.

This is really well done.

Only two only gripes:

1) As it is with most 'metal' recordings, I find the bass lacking. If I ran my SVS sub 3db hot the vocals got really muddy so I had to back to 1db over the calibrated level. I would still like to hear that bass a little more.

2) I'm not a big fan of the drumming up front and then having some cymbal action going on in the rears. You get some of that here. Of course there's other times where you get the drumming that swirls around the room which was really neat, so I'll call the whole thing a wash.

Happy listening.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Mine came today and I'm halfway through the surround mix in hi res.

Really enjoying this album. Normally the singer James LaBrie has a habit of annoying me with what I can only call "cheese factor", but this time I'm really enjoying the vox too. The music is amazing at times and the new drummer really shines.

The 5.1 mix is nice. I agree with the above comment about some drums in the rear being a bit odd but overall a nice discrete 5.1

Loving the heavy grooves.

Mine arrived on Friday but as expected my Denon DVD-A1 would not read the disc frown.gif so I had to listen to the CD. Very good album though, a different feel then the past few. Although definitely not the same as Falling into Infinity but like that album it really stands out as a different experience to the other albums around it.

Same here! I thought it was me, glad I found this post. I took it back to BB, where I bought it but they stated they couldn't hear the problem. I suspect that is the case because the Samsung player they popped it into was playing the non-DVD-A tracks. I may have to argue that they need to pop this into a player that can play DVD-A, to truly tell me it's my setup and not the disc. I just sent an email to Oppo about my finding.

I just got a reply from Oppo that they have another inquiry about this issue and will look into it and hopefully integrate the fix in a future firmware.

It appears it is just the 103 (maybe 105) at this time. I wonder what is different about the DT tracks that is tripping up this player?

My OPPO 95 plays it fine. No video or menu but i think that is just how the disc is.

Very good tracks on the Album. I am not a DT fan except for PMU really. Pleasantly suprised by the music.

It's a rock/metal album and uses surround for ambience most of the time with occation localization into the rears for dramatic effects.

I have a 105 and a friend of mine has a 103. We both have the same issue previously reported with the DVD-A of Dream Theater (even with different discs).

I have dozens of DVD-A and it's the first time I encouter this problem. So I am really surprised that this is a problem with the Oppo, not with the disc it self, but it turns out that the Oppo 103 and 105 are really the culprits... I'd love to know why !

Anyway I hope this is will be solved in the near future thanks to a firmware release.

Generally issues like this are due to the disk authoring used and it's not an unheard of thing for DVD-A or Blu-ray discs.
Oppo usually handles them pretty quickly.

It ain't ignorance causes so much trouble; it's folks knowing so much that ain't so
