I don't have a lot of recent albums on DVD-A, but I just found 3 Doors Down's last album, "Away From The Sun". It sounds great. BTW, it's also available on SACD.

I'll also put in another vote for Queen's "The Game"; it's probably my favorite DVD-A.

I also recommend "A Night at the Opera". That DVD is worth buying for "Bohemian Rhapsody" alone.

Oldies but Goodies:

The Doors: "L.A. Woman"

Fleetwood Mac: "Rumours"

The Eagles: "Hotel California"

I have it. I love the album since it originally came out. However, this is not a very good sounding DVD-A and not what I consider a very "discrete" mix. Go for the Porcupine Tree DVD-A's for the real deal.

Judas Priest - Angel of Retribution is only enhanced stereo, but sounds quite nice--heavy as hell. Just got the dualdisc of System of a Down - Hypnotize (also enhanced stereo), and I couldn't tell any difference as compared to standard redbook.

On the down side, neither of those CD sides are recognized by my computer, which means no iPod action--i'm getting sick of that, especially when the dualdisks are so skimpy.

On the other hand, the nine inch nails DVD-As are incredible! Amazing surround sound mixes--highly recommended.

While it is nowhere near metal, my favorite "show off" DVD-A 5.1 is Flaming Lips - Yoshimi vs the Pink robots. The mix is the most aggressive i've heard, and it's a great album, very creative.

I'm 49 and I love this DVD-A. I use cold water to clean up the blood.

The ELP DVD-A is a good mix. Lucky Man in particular sound great.

You're a better man than I am, It's been three days since I listened to it and my ears are just getting back to normal. I think it is a good mix, I liked the bass alot but the sound overall just wore me out, I have sensitive hearing to begin with. Maybe in a few weeks I'll give it another shot.

How the hell am I supposed to learn anything with all this yackin' going on.

This is definitely a LOUD disk. In fact it is the loudest thing I own. If my neighbours ever pissed me off this would be the disk I'd play to get even.

That being said, it is a very enjoyable recording. I'm 38 and I like this mix. Other than the ubiquitous Black Eyed Peas I do not own a single piece of Rap, Hip Hop, Gansta etc. as this is not the type of music that appeals to me. But this weird fusion of musical genres and the power of this mix is really effective on my system.

Within Temptation - The Silent Force (DualDisc)

It's symphonic Gothic Metal from the Netherlands and that's where I had to order it from. It's in transit but I'm not allowed to listen to it until Christmas as it is a gift. I believe the site says the mix is surround sound

I wouldn't exactly consider Journey 'recent'. These stereo SACDs worth it even if I already have the CDs?

Here are some more for the list.

Motorhead:Ace of Spades(DVD-A) -The Daddy!

Dimmu Borgir: Death Cult Armagedon(DVD-A) -Top notch Black Metal from the Nordic wastelands.

Nightwish:Once.(DVD-A) -Operatic Metal. So insane it's brllliant

All of these are available in the UK. Apart from Motorhead they may be a bit too "European" to have made it across the pond.

Nameinuse2,

I have the Living Colour Collideoscope DVD-A. I think it is one, a great album by one of my favorite bands, and two a really good DVD A. I just listened to a few tracks from this album again 2 days ago after replacing the Samsung 841 DVD player with a 950 to to check multichannel audio playback.

Thanks,

CJ

It's not SACD or DVD-A per se, but Collective Soul is coming out w/ their first concert DVD, recorded w/ the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra. Just caught the sneak preview on DTV and I gotta say, if any music was intended for SACD or DVD-A, this is it. Sounded like it could be an amazing sonic performance.

Do you know the release date? This would be one I'd be interested in.

Agreed. I wish a LOT more rock genre releases would include DVD-A and/or SACD. Collective Soul in particular would be just amazing. Nickelback is another band I'd be interested in hearing in hi-res.

If you like Within Temptation check out Xandria - Ravenheart, also European gothic. Ravenheart is available on hybrid stereo and 5.1 SACD.

Okay, so you guys consider "Blue Man Group" as ROCK/METAL but not Santana?

So let me guess you also won't consider Stevie Ray Vaughan as ROCK either huh, with his Texas Flood on SACD, or heaven's forbid his live session recording with Albert King on SACD because they're really just blues guitarists. Along those same lines, I guess Eric Clapton (Reptile - DVD-A) and his joint recording with B.B. King (Riding with the King - DVD-A) are also not ROCK to you guys. I guess if ALL of the songs on an album are not "ROCK" then the whole album isn't.

Rush SA-CD's were announced years ago and I lost faith long ago. Their little covers EP was supposed to be a hybrid too and, of course, it wasn't. Don't get your hopes up....

I put this CD away after one listen because the compression was unbearable. I wonder if the DVD-A is any better.

I've got to try and find an import copy of Death Cult Armagedon on DVD-A. Progenies of the Great Apolalypse is one of the greatest metal songs ever recorded. If you can get past the lame 'scary' lyrics, the music is incredible! The entire album was recordered with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra creating a really rich, beautiful yet heavy sound. Good Stuff.
