I finally got around to buying Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come on DVD-A, and it is an incredible mix. I originally got the album maybe twelve years ago when I was in college, and it's a classic. If you like hardcore at all, you'll check it out, and the multichannel is flat-out awesome. Also, I got mine from secondspin and after shipping it was less than $5.

Also, for those into heavy but still with some noodling (but way less noodling than Porcupine Tree), Between the Buried and Me's most recent album The Great Misdirect has a multichannel mix on the bonus DVD. It's a really good surround mix. If only they would remix Alaska...

Anathema - We Are Here Because We Are Here from Burning Shed; CD + DVD-A. 5.1 mix by the incomparable Steven Wilson. Nice atmospheric and melodic music that reminded me of early Yes and early Porcupine Tree/No Man. Great multichannel sound - the MLP 5.1 mix was sonically distinctly superior to the DTS 5.1 version. A great addition to the multichannel rock repertoire.

Probably best to open it up to other formats also like Pure Audio Blu-ray and high res digital downloads as for example Nirvana's Nevermind and In Utero are both on Blu-ray with Pearl Jam's Ten on a list of Universal's upcoming titles. All of these are on HDTracks plus a few additional Pearl Jam albums. Rush has a couple Blu-ray's of 2112 and Moving Pictures plus there is the SACD's of Counterparts and Hemispheres. They also have the 3 DVD-Audio albums in the Sector's box sets, one DVD-Audio in each set. All of the albums in the Sector's sets are available on HDTracks. Dream Theater's latest album is actually available on DVD-Audio. Soundgarden's Superunknown will be available on Bu-ray in a few months but only in the uber expensive edition. There are a few SHM-SACD's of the Ozzy era Black Sabbath albums with maybe even all of the Ozzy era stuff available on HDTracks. I'm also sure I seen something recently about more King Crimson stuff.

This is just some of the stuff I can think of off the top of my head but I'm sure there are lots more as like was pointed out this thread is now quite old.

Wow - I assume that these titles you mention on blu-ray are "pure audio" ?

I have been trying to search for DVD-Audio titles, but it is so hard to search for on e.g. Amazon - I get just about only DVD titles :-(

German Nuclear Blast used to have a lot of DVD-Audio titles incl. Black Metal by Dimmu Borgir - seems like these titles are all gone now :-(

I really hope that more classic metal like Black Sabbath, - and 80'ties trash like Slayer, Metallica will come out on blu-audio - Metallica is already out on 45rpm re-issues.... but the price and the maintenance of vinyl :-(

Sounds like a good reason to buy into an Oppo-BDP105(D).... :-D

I agree that we should add these new formats to the list! :-)

The Nirvana ones are and since it was a list from Universal Music the Pearl Jam one would be as well if/when it comes out. The Rush ones aren't Pure Audio so to speak because they are not published by Universal Music as that seems to be a phrase used by them however the Rush albums are still the same high resolution, so 5.1 96/24 PCM and 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio.

Just a note, the Nirvana blu-rays are stereo.

The Deep Purple 'Machine Head' SACD is a really good one.

Rush's 'Moving Pictures' CD/DVD-A. While not reference quality, it's a huge improvement over any other release of this album.

Nine Inch Nails 'Downward Spriral'. Again not reference quality, just because of all the industrial noise that was used to make the album. But the surround mix is wonderful. The last two minutes of 'Closer' is worth the price of admission alone.

I really like the new Dream Theatre self titled album on DVD-A.

I don't know how you would classify Clapton, but Slowhand and 461 Ocean Boulivard SACD are must haves.

Just a few titles off the top of my head that are still in print and reasonably priced.

Where are you getting a SACD for Sabbath's 13? I checked Amazon and there is nothing there, I also checked out sa-cd.net and no listing for it there either.

I don't think there's one either. CD Japan does have SHM-CDs of the regular and deluxe versions of "13" though...

Ah maybe that's what he saw. I did the same thing with Nirvana's Nevermind, I thought there was a SHM-SACD but as it turns out it is just a SHM-CD.

Since Anathema has already been mentioned in this thread, here is a heads up on a new release that includes a 5.1 high rez mix:

Anathema - Distant Satellites

3 disc deluxe version in a rigid slipcase featuring cd plus 5.1 / 24-bit hi-res stereo dvd-v and 'Making Of' documentary dvd.

Presented in a 44 page heavyweight hardback book.

The deluxe edition is on sale now as a pre-order at a bit of a 'discount', but with shipping, this is a $75 proposition. But it looks like a nice package. I just ordered mine.

While Steve Wilson was involved in some of the mixing, the 5.1 mix is by a member of Opeth. The info is not crystal clear on what exact format the DVD with the 5.1 audio tracks is in, but based on prior discs from them, DVD-Audio is a good guess.

Order here: https://www.burningshed.com/store/anathema/product/5/5643/

I would love some more metal in 5.1! Septic Flesh have 'Great Mass' released in 5.1 and their other albums would be perfect. Anything heavy with a dense production would be great!

Scorpions: Blackout (2channel)

and

Black Sabbath: 13 (5.1)

are both set for release in November.

If you don't have the new Opeth disc buy it immeadiately.

Opeth has nice dynamics. Smooth; no harshness.

Sabbath is listed as MC but I AM SURE it will be 2.0; we will see.

BTQ; Opeth Ghost Reveries is 90% Multi channel stereo. Very poor. Rip it and open in audacity; you will see the same music in all four channels(net to nothing in center and sub).

Right now it looks like a European release only and the description has been updated to 2.0

I haven't pulled the trigger yet as I haven't read any reviews and while the music is awesome, the mastering the on CD leaves something to be desired, i.e. LOUD.
