Trying to decide on the Abbado Beethoven cycle on DVD-A (DG) or the Finley with LSO on SACD (the Masur on Pentatone SACD is also a possibility). I know there are others, but these are, collectively, closely matched in price (much as I'd like to have 10 or more cycles, one will have to do for now), with the caveat that the 9th by Abbado is extremely hard to find and more expensive than the other eight (for reasons I cannot fathom). Any guidance would be appreciated.

Santana DVD-A

The 1812 is a keeper. I've got that recording on vinyl, cd and sacd. But compared to the other two, the cd blows.

AFAIK, it ain't the same recording on the LP. I think the performance on the LP (1979) is vastly superior and the only thing I use the SACD (2001) for is the test tracks at the end.

first thanks to Kal

Greg, there is a SACD of this but its not in multichannel. My system is made up entirely of bookshelf speakers, cannot BM analog inputs and is anaemic without the .1 channel

i'm praying that particular disc isn't 4.0

You should consider an ICBM from Outlaw--they're still available on the used market.

I was at the Festival Son et Image in Montreal yesterday and I picked up a few discs:

Tierney Sutton (Telarc can't remember the title, it's in another room) SACD
Vaughan Williams A Sea Symphony (Channel Classics) SACD
Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue (and other selections) (Mobile Fidelity) SACD

and some CDs as well (not hi-res though).

If your player bass manages properly, setting the speakers to SMALL should provide you with plenty of subwoofer output with x.0 discs.

hmm ok I'll try it with another 4.0 disc I just remembered I have. I did set speakers to small (within the player)

does anyone know offhand if the Oppo 970 motherboard (inside a Cambridge Audio DVD89) does this properly?

Boo!

If the 970 is like the 980, it will not bass manage DVD-A tracks that are 96kHz and higher. So, even if your speakers are set to SMALL, if the 4.0 DVD-A that you are trying has 96kHz multichannel tracks, the speakers will be treated as if they are set to LARGE and there will be no subwoofer output as there will be no bass rerouted there. If the 4.0 DVD-A has, for example, 48kHz multichannel tracks, it will be bass managed properly.

Are you talking about DVD-A or SACD? I think that player should bass manage SACDs properly.

You're using multichannel analog connections and you have your speakers set to SMALL within the player, correct?

Okay, first SACD purchase. I didn't go big, just wanted to see if I liked it first. I'm anxiously awaiting the shipment. I'm mostly a rock, indie type person, so the pickings were slim.

Same goes for the Malene Mortensen disc I just bought.

Strange because though its on an obscure label other releases from that same label do appear on the site. Oh well.....
