Don't judge a SACD/CD by it's cover...this disc is stupid good. I've paid a lot more for discs not near this dynamic and entertaining. Great tip Bill and great review Dan on the other SACD listening/rating thread...spot on. This one's a no brainer if you like the classic/smooth jazz sound. A great tenor sax is just plain sexy. Not a bad idea to have a true matched surround system with the heavy use of the rears and blending of front and back. This has to be one of the best bargains out there.

Martin,

I'm glad you enjoyed At Last as it really is an outstanding MCH SACD. I see you also have Listen Here! which is another excellent Gene Harris SACD. Listen Here! is I believe OOP so it is harder to find and more expensive. I recently bought the Ray Brown Trio - Summer Wind / Live at the Loa SACD which has Gene Harris and Scott Hamilton on it. This is a recording of a live show and it sounds great but I prefer At Last and Listen Here!. Live at the Loa is available at importcds and At Last is available at Amazon.

Bill

My SACD collection, watch it grow and my wallet shrink ;-).

Denon 4311 (in preamp mode), Parasound 2100, Boston Acoustics A7200 amp, Oppo BDP-103, Consonance CD120, Panasonic TC-P60GT50 plasma, Panamax 5100EX, Salk Song Towers, Song Center, ADS 300C (surrounds) and two Rythmik F12SEs.

The old style is on the left and the new style is on the right with beefier hinges. No tape measure needed this time.

That's the same issue with the dvd-a, they come in two sizes that I know off.

Not being a collector, I don't know how important that the packaging be 100% original. But for the more valuable titles, I would probably swap cases from something of little or no value. And for the titles that fit that latter description, I would likely simply step them down to a CD case.

Dan

Dan,

I only have a few DVD-As so I haven't attempted to swap cases. Is it the same issue with the hinges being smaller on the older cases?

Jeff,

Not that I consider myself a collector but more about being OCD with not wanting to have cases with cracks. Of course once the artwork is modified the value of that title is diminished. But your suggestion is a good one and one that I have already done a few times. The only difference is I place the less desirable SACD and artwork in the cracked case. That way if I come across that correct cases the artwork is still original.

Sure, that is preferable, if the hinges are not too damaged.

Hey all, I was perusing the stacks at a local used cd/book store and I came across a SACD of Yo-yo Ma's Songs of Joy & Peace. As I am new to SACD I purchased this. It was only $8.95, and still sealed. The only question I have is I can't seem to find it listed anywhere. I have checked sa-cd, import cds, and elusive disc as well as Amazon. It has a pull strip across it that says CHINARECORDCO on the plastic overwrap. Has red Xrcd logo on upper left corner and a SACD logo with a lot of Chinese writing in lower right corner. It is a 2 cd set with 7 or 8 more songs than the standard cd had on it. Has anyone else seen or heard this? This just has my curiosity piqued. Thanks.

How 'bout them Vols! Long time alumni/fan, regular on Volnation.

China manufactures/distributors have some discs out there, but not available through normal channels/distributors. I just purchased a new release analogue productions disc from standard channels and it's not listed on SACD.net yet. If you have a UPC, you can request the add on SACD.net.

I just got my very first sacd. I had to start with "Dark Side of the Moon" and oh boy!!. I don't know if I'll be able to listen to music any other way. I have a mediocre system with a less than stellar player (my Sony blu ray player) in a room that is not acoustically treated (yet) and it sounds awesome. I just maybe hooked. I hope I can find some good "metal" title.

cheers

Welcome to the club, Dark Side was one of my first disc as well, not too sure it could have been Brother's in Arms by Dire Straits which is awesome as well.

Happy listening

Uh oh--welcome to the darkside . Not a lot of metal in SACD but there are some in DVD-A. Here's a few I have (and some may not really be considered "metal"):

SACD
Alice In Chains/Greatest Hits
Godsmack/The Other Side (acoustic)
Joe Satriani/Engines of Creation & Strange Beautiful Music
Nine Inch Nails/The Downward Spiral

DVD-A
Metallica/The Black Album
Iron Maiden/Dance Of Death
Queensryche/Empire
Steve Stevens/Flamenco A Go Go
Rush/Moving Pictures

Thanks. After reading the recent Alan Parson interview, I thought to myself that I had to try this.

I do have the MCH version and it sounds great. Granted it's a processed and compressed mix, but within that constraint its crystal clear with everything defined and delineated.

I'm spinning this for the first time and it's a very enjoyable listen. If you're not familiar with Godsmack they're a heavier band, but this acoustic disc is very clean and mellow. For me the only negative is that it's a 7-track EP so just over 30 minutes of music.

Quick side question as I am sure between all on this thread I can get help

My fat PS3 bit the dust today so I am out also a SACD player.

Is there an inexpensive SACD player out there? I only need SACD playback, no DVDA, BD, etc. I don't own any DVDA and already have a standalone BD player. My wife is already mad I am getting a new PS3 lol.

Bit by the upgrade bug, limited by the WAF

Sony bdp-s380 can be picked up for around $80. Or try the usual spots for used players.

My fat PS3 bit the dust today
so I am out also a SACD player.

Is there an inexpensive SACD player out there? I only need SACD playback, no DVDA, BD, etc. I don't own any DVDA and already have a standalone BD player. My wife is already mad I am getting a new PS3 lol.

I see two problems
