Checking that out. I already have a hi-rez flac download of Gaucho (stereo), so I'm really looking for the DVD-Audio, which was also on Amazon smile.gif

In SACD, the MCA title is MCH. The Universal Japan title is not. Caveat emptor!

The DVD-A is MCH.

It can get confusing. I have mistakenly bought things I didn't want. Not hi-res music, but I have here a PAL Blu-ray of "The Art of Flight" to attest to my own stupidity.

Yamaha RX-A1000 (also did the same with my previous AVR, an Integra DTR 6.4). Being able to adjust the settings is important, though. I've tried it on AVRs where there is no adjustment possible and it is less impressive (to me).

David Gilmour, "Live at the Royal Albert Hall" (blu-ray)
Jeff Beck, "Live at Ronnie Scotts" (blu-ray)
Rush, "Snakes and Arrows Live" (blu-ray)
Steven Wilson, "Get All You Deserve" (blu-ray)
Norah Jones, "Come Away With Me" (m-ch SACD)
Porcupine Tree, "Fear of a Blank Planet" (DVD-A)
Patricia Barber, "Modern Cool" (blu-ray) My reference blu-ray!
Sara K., "Made in the Shade" (blu-ray)
Lee Ritenour, "Overtime" (blu-ray)
Dire Straits, "Brothers In Arms" (m-ch SACD)
Throw in about a half-dozen stereo SACD's I've purchased in the last 2 months and it's starting to look like an addiction.
All the above purchased since mid-August biggrin.gif
Oh...And I forgot..Today the 40th Anniversary "Thick as a Brick" arrived!

I used to be the same way. MCH in discrete form only. Then I read about adjusting the parameters for DPLII, played around with some settings and became a convert to PLII for music in the HT room (save the very few exceptions noted earlier). There was another format--I believe it was called Penteo--that was even more impressive with 2CH recordings. Originally converted at the manufacturer's end (the designer provided me and others with samples), there was some talk about putting out a converter for home use. Apparently, some sort of legal and corporate issues put the kibosh on the whole thing. Too bad, really, as it was very good. You can hear it in action in the movie The Watchmen. A lot of 2CH material was converted to MCH for the film's soundtrack using the Penteo system (the Hendrix version of All Along the Watchtower, as I recall, was among them).

Steve,

I would say it looks like the importcds listing on ebay for the Gaucho SACD is listed as Universal by mistake (maybe not?). If you read the full listing it says Import only SACD-Hybrid pressing of their 2003 album (Gaucho was released in 1980, the MCA SACD was released in 2003). If it was a listing for the Universal SHM-SACD it would be single layer and it would cost a lot more than $15.98. The release date of 2003 also indicates it is the MCA SACD, the SHM-SACD was released I believe in 2010. So I would say the ebay listing is for the MCA stereo/multichannel SACD.

I just looked at my Gaucho MCA SACD and it says on the back cover "A Universal Music Company" so the listing on ebay is partially correct wink.gif.

Steve,

Definitely confusing thanks to the importcds listing on ebay wink.gif. I played the Gaucho last week and it is an excellent sounding SACD. No shortage of bass from the sub thats for sure eek.gif.

Dan

Dan,

I hear you as I'm a product of a Boston area "high" school education which I'm sure isn't much better if at all biggrin.gif. I would say if you are looking for the MCA stereo/multichannel SACD grab the one in the ebay listing. If I'm wrong and you get the SHM-SACD you will get a disc that you can sell easily for $35-40 smile.gif. As far as I know there are only two SACD versions of Gaucho.

Wow. I read this and went to look at my copy of the Japan import of the Nightfly and it says it's SACD which I thought meant multi channel. It says Warner Bros. 2002 .
When I put it in my old PS3 that plays SACD the display shows various layers to be played, one of which says multi channel.
I'm new to this format and so may be missing something here. Can you illuminate my ignorance. I hate to think I bought a $50 disk that's not really MCH or just stereo MCH which I also see printed on the back.

Thanks.

It's multichannel! Some of the others that were released in multichannel were rereleased in sterero only (BJ Stranger and 52nd St. for example)...

Thanks.

I had an awakening, and an embarrassing one at that, when I discovered that SACD was not synonymous with MCH. Up until then, my hi-res experience was with DVD-Audio, which at least in my collection, was always multichannel.

To put a finer point on it, there are a lot of stereo ONLY SACD ... there is NO MCH layer.

You are OK with the title you mention; if it says there is a multichannel layer, they there is.

Same here-I messed with manuals and settings for over an hour trying to get my first ever SACD (stereo) to play MCH. I tried everything--even swapping cables redface.gif.

Which title was it? I've been there as well. That is when sa-cd.net is so valuable as far as researching SACDs before buying them.

Some/most/all(?) players have a menu setting to select the MCH or stereo layer of SACD ... ? (I dimly remember that.)

Might even be an output format selection. If possible you want to output DSD and let you processor/receiver decode. What gear do you have?

At first I never bothered buying Stereo only SACD's...Then I upgraded my mains and picked up an Oppo 83se. I still prefer 5.1 or quad, but have bought many HiRez 2.0 discs and am always looking for more!

This was several years ago and I don't remember the title. At the time I thought all SACDs were MCH and after an hour of fiddling around I noticed "stereo SACD" on the jewel case. I just remember thinking "what the hell am I doing wrong?"

Jeff,

The Oppo players have a menu setting to default SACD to either multichannel or stereo. Thats and easy choice for me smile.gif. As far as using the DSD setting that is what I was doing till I found that bass (LFE and bass sent to my sub below 80Hz) was 10dB lower than with the PCM setting. It seems to be an issue with Denon AVRs and prepros as the +10dB boost is not being applied to DSD. So now I just use PCM as I'm using Audyssey and not any of the direct audio settings.

Jeff,

I believe it is not an issue with Onkyos as I did a quick comparison with a friends 5508. If you notice in the 5508's menu there is a LFE setting for DSD. There is no setting with the 4311 for DSD to boost the LFE level. Here is a link to a thread I started discussing the low LFE and bass issue.

I've been a progressive audiophile and have used ambience extraction since the "Hafler circuit." With stereo I, mostly but not always, listen using one of the variations of Dolby or DTS.

Friday Night in San Francisco (Stereo-SACD) and The Nightfly (MCH DVD-A) arrived today. Both are fantistic upgrades to the redbook releases, however I'm only part-way through FNISF so far but I intend to do some side-by-side comparisons soon.

McIntosh MX121. McIntosh MC205. Focal Aria 948 Main Speakers, Aria CC900 Center. Focal Electra IC 1002 In-Ceiling Surrounds. Paradigm Studio Sub 15. Oppo BDP-105D. Roku XS. Roku 3. Apple TV(3). DirecTV. Panasonic TC-P65VT50. Samsung UN40FH6030F, URC MX-780.
My current SACD list
