Steve Hackett- Genesis revisited - Live at Royal Albert Hall

Heads-up for you prog-heads out there, there is a deluxe special edition of the Live concert Steve Hackett and band performed at the Royal Albert Hall that contains a BluRay with a high-rez 4.1 mix of this stupendous performance:

https://www.burningshed.com/store/In...duct/523/5757/

The mix is mostly hall ambiance in the rears, and the main channels are not compressed and are 24/96. Only issue I have with it is the bass is *cranked* on this mix.
Not sure if the CD is as well, have yet to spin that.
Note that it is a quad (4.1) mix, so your center channel will be left alone. For most systems, that's probably a good thing.

Video quality for the BluRay is outstanding, and a very sane and calm person was at the editing desk, so we actually get to see the right players play, he does not linger on just the singer, and does not suffer from the *%#@ ADD every other editor seems to have. So this is one of the best concert films I've seen in a while.
The fact that I love the content a lot probably helps ;-)

Just listened to these last night with my wife and our dog... All i gotta say is , Steve, you outdid yourself.. from "Time of The Season" by The Zombies, OMG... the seperation and clarity... amazing!! "FWIW" Buffalo Springfield.. never have i heard it like this....!! "How Long" by Ace.. always wanted to hear this in high-res and I got my wish.. sounds great!! The guitar part coming up on the right is particularly clear and present!! "Schools Out" By Mr. Cooper, awesome!! I don't have the gold cd's of Mr. Cooper, but this one sounds frickin cool! Thats just some of my initial off-the cuff thoughts/review's..More to come... I love these sets!!!!!!!

Yes to both crazy and am I high (I wish ). The two SACDs were $88.33 shipped from cdjapan. Certainly no bargain but well worth it to me. Both are "HR cutting from DSD master in 2014 based on US original analog tape.Bill

That's actually a good price for SHM-SACDs, 44 per shipped.
I just got the Quadrophenia BD.
Excellent, highly recommended only $18.46.

Also got the CSNY '74 Tour BD\DVD set.
Listened to several cuts, love it.

Hey Milt...I was on a couple of AA flights last week and they were showcasing the '74 box set on one of the audio entertainment channels. I'm a big CSNY fan and will be buying this at some point. Of course the sound quality was awful on the inflight system, but I also noticed that the vocal harmonies were not that great on the live recordings (as compared to the studio releases). I realize it was a drug-infused 70's tour, but how are you finding the harmonies so far. Were they just not that great live in '74? Do they sound great on the BD/DVD?

I saw the $70 handle Amaz had on one of the titles and gagged. Still, I can't help but think the $44's will drop to something considerably less after the first round of buyers. No rush.

There's good and not so good but the concerts they used for the recording were later in the tour, still good for me.
Actually, I saw the debut of this tour from the front row at the Seattle Coliseum in July of 74'.
It's really shame that they didn't record that one because it was awesome.
Even back then I remember being concerned about the quality of the harmonies but that night they were beautiful.
They were playing 40 to 40+ songs every show. Quite the ordeal.
Still the best concert I've seen, imo.

Rumors that AF may be releasing these with 5.1 but how truthful that is who knows.

Jeff,

I don't think these SHM-SACDs will drop below $44 from any etailers in the states but I could be wrong.

That price is just beyond what I am willing to pay for a new release. But I am glad they're revisiting those older titles.

Hah! I might part with that amount for 5.1 ....

There was mention of Steely Dan titles in this thread over at SH that possibly had multichannel mixes IIRC.

Playing catch up with the thread. I think Bill has been on and off the wagon 3 times since I've posted on here...things just seem right with the world when Bill is spreading his wealth.

Picked up a few over the last couple of weeks...working my way through them but first impressions.

SHM-SACD Titles:
Allman Brothers Band - Beginnings +2: It's a double album so it's like $11 per side. Easily the best ABB on my shelf.
Carpenters - The Singles 1969-1973: Working from memory, but it may better the MCH SACD (haven't compared, but it's reference material)
Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story: Outstanding and easily betters my MFSL, which is very good.
Steve Winwood - Arc of a Diver: More revealing than my MFSL, but that may its downfall as well...highlights the average recording.

Yes Jeff...$44 ea, but I get points that burn a whole in my e-pocket. 1 week delivery from JA

AF SACD Titles:
Legends - Get it On: Mixed bag...most are outstanding, but the song mix has been overplayed over the years. Still great to have some previously unavailable classics in hirez. I hit fast forward on this one more than I expected too.
Legends - Crank it Up: The stronger of the two releases in my opinion. Good Lovin', Love the One You're With are the only marginal tracks...still may be the definitive versions, they just don't match the AQ of the other songs. Fun listen and great intro for those new to SACD 2.0. In the Air Tonight and Time of the Season are worth the price of admission.

Blu-Ray Titles:
The Who - Quadrophenia: It's 5.1 and the AQ rivals the SHM-SACD with the exception of some vocals that seem to forward.
Pink Floyd - The Division Bell: I was only familiar with the last 2 tracks, but this is done very well. Find a version, it's good.

HDTracks Download:
Led Zeppelin - I, II, III (2.0 24/96): My new go to versions. I like them better than the Diament masters.

DVD - Lossy (DTS)
Juethro Tull - A Passion Play: In the listening queue

Chief,
I plan on doing an A/B of the Quad BD vs. the SHM-SACD.
My initial impression of the BD is much better than I remember my initial impression of the SHM-SACD being but that was months ago.

The Who-Quadrophenia......CSNY-1974[both Blu rays]

If a movie or concert video or a TV show isn't on blu ray it darn well should be.

I've heard tracks from this concert on iTunes radio, and it sounds quite good. Although no one can replace the young PG's voice and visuals, this may be as close as it gets today. I may pick this concert Blu-Ray at my next binge.

Also listening to HFPA (stereo) versions of Exile on Main Street and White Light, White Heat, and they are both quite good. Hope that VU and Loaded also do get released as Blu-Ray HFPA discs.

I did a limited A/B of the 2014 stereo Quad BD vs. the SHM-SACD last nite.
I posted a more detailed impression at SHF but the bottom line is this:
The BD is a noticeable improvement IMO.

Several at SHF have blasted the BD as "bright" and "forward".
Two of the most over used and misunderstood analogs for SQ.
On my system to my ears the BD hasn't a smidgen of brightness, in fact the SACD has more distortion and what sounds like tape saturation to me.
Both Quadrophenia and Who's Next in their original forms were dense and sometimes muddy.
The BD really put an end to that.
The forward comment is because the mix has a lot of the vocals more up front with the rest of the instruments.
To me, this is an improvement of all of the previous versions I've heard.
Very apparent on I'm The One
Sure there are some things that sound a bit dated, the cymbals and drums are a bit closed in but I think that's with the original recording and is baked in.
Most Highly Recommended.
Plan on spinning the 5.1 this afternoon

The Who Quadrophenia Blu Ray Audio
A tad bright but not enough to bother and a tad light bass which might be why it seems a tad bright. That said, I like it a lot. Better then any of my 2ch cd's.

Touch every third person and you'll find stupid!

Milt,

Have you compared the '73 stereo track of the Blu-ray to the SHM-SACD? I'll be interested in your thoughts of the 5.1 mix.

Bill

My SACD collection, watch it grow and my wallet shrink ;-).

Denon 4311 (in preamp mode), Parasound 2100, Boston Acoustics A7200 amp, Oppo BDP-103, Consonance CD120, Panasonic TC-P60GT50 plasma, Panamax 5100EX, Salk Song Towers, Song Center, ADS 300C (surrounds) and two Rythmik F12SEs.

Too bad these are not hybrids, as I like to be able to pop them in the car and listen. Also, very pricey for me. Are the Mofi CDs of these still available for $20 or so? I think I wore out my Arc of a Diver LP back in the day!
