I pre-ordered Dire Straits Alchemy for $40 shipped and saved $2,263.42 over the Amazon price.
From what I remember, that disc has been listed as being "Out of print" via CDJapan for well over a year

Is that the live performance on Blu-ray? I have one of those, but have never watched it.

SMD,

The Alchemy SHM-SACD has been OOP for quite awhile. I was lucky to find a mint copy for around $55.

Jeff,

Yes they are one in the same. Of course I just had to have the SHM-SACD. But the Blu-ray is really the best deal as it has a lower price and a DTS-HD 5.1 mix.

Yep, that's it. I purchased it September 17, 2010 for $19.37. It's $25 and change on Amazon now.

It's one of the titles being re-released at CDJapan...

Steely Dan "Countdown To Ecstasy" and Donald Fagen "The Nightfly" arrived from Japan last night.

As others have said here:
  • The Nightfly is truly magnificent, in both stereo and multi-channel. It is my sort of music.
  • Countdown to Ecstasy is stereo only, is a bright recording and quite light in bass
Nightfly would be close to 5 stars, but CTE would be perhaps 3 stars.

CTE might well be how they intended it, but it feels like it is lacking something to really get going and to engage you. I haven't tried the CD layer yet (if there is on).

I agree that the Nightfly SACD and DVD-A are excellent especially the 5.1 mix. As far as your thoughts on the Countdown to Ecstasy SHM-SACD have you compared it to any other CD versions? The CtE SHM-SACD does not have a CD layer. All SHM-SACDs as far as I know are single layer discs with no CD layers.

Checked CDJapan this AM for a status on an order and the CTE SHM-SACD is no longer listed!
No OOP or anything?!?
I'm sure there are still copies available at ElusiveDisc etc. for a higher price but dang if this is truly OOP that was pretty damn quick.

Milt,

I just checked cdjapan and it shows the Countdown to Ecstasy SHM-SACD as OOP ! I have a preorder for the CtE and the Pretzel Logic SHM-SACDs. I contacted cdjapan last month and asked if my preordered copy of the CtE SHM-SACD would be reserved as I choose to have Pretzel Logic shipped together. They replied that my CtE SHM-SACD would indeed be reserved. I hope this is true and if it isn't I'm not going to be very happy! (I just checked my preorder and the CtE SM-SACD shows as "in stock").

Funny Bill.
When I did a search for it nothing came up.
I'm sure they have held your copy.
I've never had issues with CD Japan service, yet
Still, going OOP exactly one month after the release is impressive not that we know how many copies were pressed.
I guess the Limited Edition label is for real.

August purchases:

The Who: Quadropheia Blu-ray
Gentle Giant: The Power & The Glory Blu-ray
Erick Clapton: Slowhand SACD
Opeth: Pale Communication Blu-ray

I received the Opeth disc today and am really digging it. They have taken a new direction with their music the last couple of albums. Dare I say Ritchie Blackmore Rainbow-ish ? 5.1 mixed by Steven Wilson who also does the backing vocals on some tracks. There seems to be a lot of his influence on the album.

Here's a couple of tracks off the new album if your interested in a listen:

Pale Communion has been in constant rotation since receiving the special edition. I like that they've continued in the direction that they started with Heritage. I've been an Opeth fan since Ghost Reveries came out, and while I tolerated the "cookie monster" vocals, I'm a much bigger fan of Mikael's clean style. The surround mix is also very nice, as is expected from an SW mix these days.

Gentle Giant is on my short list for upcoming purchases. I've not heard too much of GG, but whatever I've heard I always enjoyed.

Gentle Giant is your father's Progressive band. Like Yes, they were Progressive before the term was used as a category. I have it on order.

Opeth ranges too far into smash your head against the wall territory, but Dream Theater gets it right ... for me.

Have you heard the 5.1 release of their newest album? I spun it once after getting it but it didn't do that much for me.

Jeff, this Opeth disc it totally different. Listen to the tracks I posted. I don't listen or like their previous death metal growls either and there is none on this album. Unfortunally, there is some talk that the 5.1 disc has the FL and LFE speaker out of phase and indeed the mix does appear to be somewhat bass shy.

I've been a huge Dream Theater fan since Images & Words, the album is probably in my top five.

It's not their best work, but it's prog. metal in hi-rez and 5.1 so I'm not complaining.

You may want to wait as the Front Left speaker is out of phase on the 5.1 mix (the stereo mix is fine). You have to change the right/left speaker wires. While having to do this totally unacceptable it doesn't take more than a few minutes for me. Once that's done, oh my gosh what a great album.

Well that's a dealbreaker for me. How moronic a mistake. Are they going to replace them?

Just bought:

Give Me Strength: The '74/'75 Recordings (5CD+1 Blu-Ray) box set.

http://www.amazon.com/Give-Me-Streng.../dp/B00F193D5Y

http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/ne...dings-box-set/

I've always been a fan of Eric Clapton's 461 Ocean Blvd. album. I couldn't resist as I found this used for a great price. Lots of unreleased material and a new 5.1 mix by Elliot Schneider makes this box set even more desirable.

Below are the tracks on the Blu-ray alone.

461 Ocean Boulevard (Elliot Scheiner 5.1 Surround Sound Mix):
1. Motherless Children,
2. Give Me Strength,
3. Willie And The Hand Jive,
4. Get Ready,
5. I Shot The Sheriff,
6. I Can't Hold Out,
7. Please Be With Me,
8. Let It Grow,
9. Steady Rollin' Man,
10. Mainline Florida,
Bonus Tracks:
11. Ain't That Lovin' You,
12. Meet Me (Down At The Bottom),
13. Lonesome Road Blues (Walkin' Down The Road).

461 Ocean Boulevard (Quadraphonic Mix):
1. Motherless Children,
2. Give Me Strength,
3. Willie And The Hand Jive,
4. Get Ready,
5. I Shot The Sheriff,
6. I Can't Hold Out,
7. Please Be With Me,
8. Let It Grow,
9. Steady Rollin' Man,
10. Mainline Florida.

There's One In Every Crowd (Quadraphonic Mix):
1. We've Been Told (Jesus Is Coming Soon),
2. Swing Low Sweet Chariot,
3. Little Rachel,
4. Don't Blame Me,
5. The Sky Is Crying,
6. Singin' The Blues,
7. Better Make It Through Today,
8. Pretty Blue Eyes,
9. High,
10. Opposites.

Give me strength, indeed.

Is ELS' 5.1 the mix that is on the SACD?

Yes indeed . The surround mix by Elliot Schneider is new for this release and a different mix than the one used for the 461 Ocean Blvd. SACD. The surround mix for the SACD was done by Mick Guzauski at Barking Doctor Studios.

SMD,

I did a conversion earlier and it came out to over $120.00 USD. I thought that was quite high and wondered if I did the conversion correctly. But I guess it was fairly accurate. That's too bad that those in the UK have to pay more than in other parts of the world . I was very lucky to get the box set used for $54.00 shipped.
