It has just sucked me in.....................

Just bought:

America - Homecoming AF SACD with 5.1 mix

I preordered this SACD from importcds with a release date listed as 4/21. The odd part is that I got an email from importcds that the SACD shipped yesterday. Very odd, but this is importcds .

Haven't heard Hand yet, but listened to Raven a few nights ago and I much preferred it to Grace. Curious to hear Hand now since Raven and Grace were very different from each other.

I have joined the America Homecoming bought list. Also ordered Little Feat Waiting For Columbus, Patricia Barber Modern Cool, The Pixies Doolittle, and Joni Mitchell Blue. Should be in for a good listening session late next week.

As for Raven I was disappointed, maybe I expected too much.

Where are you getting the Little Feat album from? Is it Hirez and/or multichannel?

Just listened to Best Of Bread from AF and my preference is for the quad mix over the stereo, the opposite of The Guess Who AF SACD. Head to head I prefer the Bread disc, but then no one asked me to compare them

What is it about the two titles' quad and stereo mixes that give you those preferences?

Well, just spun them both again to try to nail down how I feel, I always find it hard to put into words what I'm hearing sometimes. With the disc I have and on my system, The Guess Who quad sounds very muffled, muddy if you will. When I try to crank it at all I get what I call the "microphone in the wind" effect. I'm not sure what causes that, perhaps it's tape wobble. The stereo mix is much clearer, separation is better, the instruments are sharp with just a hint of high tape hiss.

Best of Bread mixes are closer to each other, but I find the quad to be a little sharper while the stereo is just ever so slightly flatter. Quiet between the notes, very nicely done on either mix really. Kind of strange, I was jumping back and forth with the mixes on the Oppo and noticed the first song, Make It With You, starts with the acoustic guitar in the left channel on the quad mix, right channel on the stereo.

Hoping to receive the Blood, Sweat, and Tears SACD from AF tomorrow, looking forward to that one. Also of note, anyone looking for a new "rock" album (those are hard to find these days, lol) try Randy Bachman's "Heavy Blues". Great guest stars performing on some of the songs and the album really rocks! Unfortunately, the cd appears quite compressed, vinyl is due out on April 28th, not sure how it'll sound.

Interesting. What is the origin of the quad mixes? Recent? Are the stereo mixes original and just remastered?

Edit: I found my answer. I have two niggling points to vent. Using old analog mixes and remastering does generally produce a sonic improvement, but it is incremental, IMO, and only a few clicks above "shovel ware." Next, I suppose if we all buy them, someone will remix the content and then we will all buy that as well. {\gets off horse}

I always enjoyed their top-40 hits, but that is not really who they were.

Jeff
Then I may have to explore the back catalogue more thoroughly. I began buying my own music in the late 70s (78 and on) as an 11 year old with little useful guidance (no older siblings and limited exposure to anything other than "both kinds of music--country and western" on my parents' radio/record collection). From 78 on, I'm pretty confident of my choices along the way (not that there weren't any clunkers now mercifully abandoned) but anything I've bought that came before that has largely been influenced by what I gleaned on radio (exceptions for bands of which I became a serious fan and whose entire catalogue ended up on my shelf). So I'm guilty of viewing Bread as a "top 40" band (hence my surprise). Another band like that is Ambrosia. Their early work could arguably be categorized as prog rock (a genre I quite enjoy) but everyone knows them for their pop hits of 79-81.

Two snaps up for Ambrosia, especially the early stuff. They almost seemed "English" back then. Their second album, Somewhere I've Never Traveled, was produced by Alan Parsons. Their first album set a high bar from which they never fell. I've got a bromance with David Pack. A few years back he took some non-writing Napa winemakers' lyrics and turned them into way more than respectable songs.

If you like this CD, and if you are into vinyl, the MFSL LPs of her work are outstanding.

Will,

Thanks but I'm not into vinyl but of course was back in the 70's and 80's. My obsession with SACDs would probably be a minor hit on the wallet compared to if I got back into vinyl
