Bill, your post got me searching for existing releases and that lead me to the apparent "controversy" over the DVD-A surround mix. I, embarrassingly, have never played the DVD-A on my serious system, but it sounds fine on my workstation 5.1 system. So into the theater i will go with it. If the BD is 5.1 (haven't looked enough yet to find the specs) I *will* pick it up as well to hear .. hopefully ... a "repaired" surround mix.

I will be taking David Live into the theater today as well. I sampled some tunes on my workstation while .. unsuccessfully so far ... trying to extract the audio. My skillz have seriously atrophied.

Jeff

edit: Woohooo, 5.1 and with some new added songs!

Well pep, since you're an SQ guy, you might want to put aside your bias of no remix regarding the Best of Doors SACD.
It is better than the cuts on the Perception discs or the APO SACDs, imo, and not by a little.
Again, very hesitant to buy another Doors release as I thought that everything that could be had was gotten from the tapes with the previous releases.
But I am happy I risked it.
OTOH, if you're not a giant Doors fan and are happy with what you got...

Re: Pets Sounds.
AFAIR, the BD will have the same 4.1, no cc, as the DVD-A.
I've had the DVD-A since day one and it never sounded very good to me at all.
All of the negative digital adjectives that I don't like to use are present.
I think the guy who did it is Linnett or something like that.
IMO, he did a ****ty job or maybe that he didn't do a ****ty job but the DVD-A sounds ****ty to me.
I usually don't like to slam the pros as I have no idea what they have to go through but to me the guy
had a prejudice against using a center channel.
You know, the "Phantom Center" is good enough for me adherents.

I'm going to be reading the reviews of these upcoming releases as much I have loved PS, the number re-releases puts in a class with Kind Of Blue.
Ridiculous

It ain't ignorance causes so much trouble; it's folks knowing so much that ain't so

I just noticed SACD.net, with a different Name thou has expanded to more Hi Rez formats including dvd-a which is wonderful to post what we have and ask question about any given title!

What isn't clear to me is if they'll both coexist, call me sentimental as I would hate to see SACD.net! Oh well will be up dating the site with my current content and will included it to my sig.

Not sure what's going on with the site at the moment but here's the name www.HRAudio.net

JA,

Sorry but I just haven't had the time as I've been on vacation several times then working extra hours as co-workers have been on vacation. Once September arrives I'll have more time to do a proper comparison. I haven't forgot .

I just bought:

Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire AF 4.0 Surround SACD

Yes, quite mesmerizing. The blu ray has 9 HD entries plus all the ones from Animusic 2 and Pipe Dream from Animusic 1 in SD. The 9 in HD are a feast for the eyes and ears. It's a great piece to show off your HT. Anyone interested I'd direct to Animusic.com to purchase, these are quite expensive from Amazon for some reason.

I have a few of his discs and the ones I've listen to are great, I haven't done any critical listening but my 4y/o daughter and I seem to enjoy it!

For sure. I've played it through a few times now, this last run through I turned it up a notch and listened at about 90db. This disc is very crankable as you would expect. Playing it loud did not make me weary at all. Just excellent fidelity, so very discrete. The surrounds are in high use, almost feels like a Steven Wilson mix Of note, in several songs the instruments are moved around, quite out of the ordinary. Going Down has the percussion in the right surround for example, Sugar Cane has it in the left surround. Other songs have it in the front stage. I like the variety here, though others may not, YMMV as always. Some favourite songs are Ice Cream Cakes, Going Down and Definitely Maybe, this latter one having such great guitar work from Jeff. Very quiet between the notes, but if you put an ear close to a speaker, you can hear just the lightest hint of hiss, not disturbing at all, and just enough to know the top end hasn't been chopped at all. Cymbal action is very crisp, always a good sign. Bass is top notch as well, not overbearing and not too light. A lot of the music has a bluesy feel to it, I'm quite happy with the purchase. My biggest complaint is that it's too short!
