I would think the only stereo SACD's in existence are because one of two things must have happened:

1. The company releasing the title didn't obtain rights to the stereo SACD.

or

2. The intended MSRP of the release was too low to afford the additional royalty required to release it in stereo.

I have never seen a multichannel only SACD but I have a bunch of multichannel only DVD-A's.

Yeah, I really dislike not being able to access a specific stereo track on these. Brain Salad Surgery and Bela Fleck's Tales from the Acoustic Planet come to mind.

I just bought the OOP version of Billy Joel's "The Stranger" on ebay. The multichannel mix really brings this album to life. Even the "schmaltzy" tunes like "Always A Woman" and "Just the Way You Are" sound excellent. But the highlight is clearly "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant". The way the instruments are mixed and the use of the surrounds is nothing short of genius.

How was the Roger Water's SACD? I just recently wanted to get into SACD's. I bought Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the moon and Creedance Clearwater Revival - Concert SACD.

I wanted to pull the trigger on the Water's CD but I want to see what its like from the 2 that I bought. I want to find some more modern music as well.

You're right about SACDs having a hi-rez multi-channel surround mix but not a hi-rez 2 channel stereo mix. However, of the 5,000+ SACD titles released worldwide, I imagine there are only about 10 such titles. "Ray Charles Live at the Olympia 2000" being one of them. Therefore, it's very unlikely that you will run into one while shopping for SACD.

Or the intended audience doesn't care for multi-channel surround sound for audio-only music reproduction.

The Roger Waters In The Flesh sacd's pretty good imho[sounds a bit better than the dvd imho].

If a movie or concert video or a TV show isn't on blu ray it darn well should be.

Hey Chris, I just got the Donovan - Storyteller as well, and as I'm listening to it, I'm thinking the same thing stereo. But for a stereo SACD this disc sounds awesome. Then with Sunshine Superman full 5.0 surround. I'm very happy I picked this up.

I have three Audio Fidelity stereo SACD's, the other two are the Zombies and Searchers compilations. I like all three.

NIN - The Downward Spiral
Bob Dylan - SACD Box Set
Incubus - A Crow left of the Murder...
O Brother Where Art Thou

DVD-A:
Outkast - Stankonia
Beck - Sea Change
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Black Planet
The Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
The Flaming Lips - At War with the Mystics
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Laurence Juber - Guitar Noir

I have a question regarding SACDs:
In theory, should the quality of the stereo mix and the multi channel mix of an SACD be the same, or is the stereo mix superior in terms of audio quality?

At the moment I have a really, really terrible system and am currently unable to notice any difference between quality of an mp3 and the quality of an SACD release so I really have no idea. Needless to say I am dying to get a completely new system, but that is unfortunately a couple of months away. I hope my SACDs and DVD-As do not disappoint.

Same technical quality but, of course, dependent on the mixing and mastering.

As Kal said, for SACDs, the 'quality' of the SACD layers is the same.

For DVD-As, however, the quality of the 2-channel and multichannel hirez tracks CAN be different, with the 2-channel tracks sometimes being higher quality.

How much are people paying for Beck's Sea Change? I've heard some really good things about this album. I'd like to get a copy.

*edit* I looked on tower. Is this it? For this cheap?

I don't have this one (yet) but the Bill Evans SACDs I have (Village Vanguard and Explorations) are superb.

It says "DVD". IIRC, your player is a Sony and won't do DVD-A.

I'll trade you my Sea Change SACD for that DVD-A.

If you like guitar music, I highly recommend either of the following by Al DiMeola. Both are excellent multi-channel SACD mixes:

"Consequence of Chaos"
"Flesh on Flesh"

Also, I picked up "Friday Night in San Francisco" by Al Dimeola, John McLaughlin, & Paco Delucia, which was recommended by another poster. This is two-channel only, but an excellent live performace.

The Buffalo Daughter SACD of Psychic is 2-channel and sounds quite nice. The differences between the redbook and SACD layer are subtle but noticeable. I lucked out at finding a sealed copy in the used bin at Recofan at a good price while in Tokyo.

Curious about this Japanese pop band....but too expensive to get the SACD here in the US just to "experiment".
